As Ken Andrews, Greg Edwards and Kellii Scott took the stage to a roaring applause inside the very intimate Zebulon, the room with the high ceilings suddenly became a full of individual space capsules as each person was ejected into the wonderful world that is the band, Failure. Not many bands can create such an individual feeling amongst a sea of a couple hundred people but, Failure can. For the next hour and a half, this beyond influential and inspirational trio hit every note, melody, chord and rhythm with such a a visceral intensity that sent chills and joy through us all. While it has been a minute since Failure has been on stage, and one for me to see them as well, this evening showed why they are one of the best to ever do it.
Late last year I introduced you all to a new electronic group called LVX. Their debut song “Writhe” has yet to leave my suicide rotation. I enjoyed it so much that I had to know more and interviewed Justin Hanson, which was an absolutely fantastic conversation. Now here we are as “Hexer” has arrived. This song continues in the cinematic universe with some great twists and turns. There is a heaviness to this song without it being “heavy.” “Hexer” is the type of electronic song that escalates in a subtle manner and will sway you in way that feels weightless. Be sure to check out the video as well as that will take you places as well. I am very pumped for what else is to come!
We’ve all heard those songs in our lifetimes that anytime they come on, there comes a delightful feeling of nostalgia and excitement. For the past few weeks I’ve been revisiting some bands from the 1980’s. During my excursion into this, I keep finding myself drawn more and more into Echo and the Bunnymen. I will get more detailed on them at a later date because there is so much to unpack with Echo. There is one song of theirs in particular that has always stayed with me. Any time this song comes on the radio, in a movie, a playlist, etc, I can’t help but turn up the volume. The song is “The Killing Moon” which is found on their fourth album, Ocean Rain.
“The Killing Moon” first broke on to the music scene in 1984, and since then this song is everlasting. You’ve heard this song in countless films like Donnie Darko, Grosse Pointe Blank and so many more. This song is one of those perfect mood songs. The haunting nature of the song mixed with the string arrangement gives it that cinematic touch.
This is one of those perfect songs from an era that transcends the time.
What a whirlwind year it’s been so far. While the world is falling apart, at least we have music to keep us going. 2026 seems to be quite the year for so much new music. It’s a little overwhelming at times to keep up with everything but, lucky for you all, I’ve spent time listening to so much to pick out the best for your listening enjoyment. In this batch of new music you will find new songs from Ayva, Strata, ‘68, The Pretty Reckless, Evil Island, Saosin, The Owling, and of course the debut record from Nine Inch Noize! Enjoy!
About 5 years ago, I came across a very young band that caught my attention. At the time this young band played mostly covers with one or two originals but, you could tell there was more to these youngsters. Their live show at the time was what really struck me watching these kids play with such passion. Allow me to introduce you to the Madam Bombs!
Madam Bombs are a three piece rock band that mixes punk, garage rock, and tinges of metal and alternative. The influences and inspiration for these ladies is endless and it shines through their songs. Their fearless energy permeates through each member of the band. Songs like “Get Me Out,” “Girl With A Fuse” and “Melt” are a few of my favorites. There’s depth and substance within their songs and a catchiness that is infectious.
Guitarist/Vocalist Claire FitzGerald, has really come into her own. Her confidence as a singer is strong and her guitar playing is oh so sweet. Drummer/vocalist Samara Ellis, plays with power and passion and hits those drums with thunder. Their song “Spiral” really shows what a skilled drummer she is. Bassist/vocalist Jaden Cordova, ties it all together with the low end in a way that hits the right rhythm balance. All three share vocals and in unison sounds lively and fun.
Madam Bombs are one of the most fun young bands out there. Their progression over the last few years is astounding. Personally I can’t wait to hear what’s next. The sound of the future is in the youth of today and the Madam Bombs are one of those bands that will have you on your feet rooting for them! In fact, come see Madam Bombs on Saturday April 18 at The Cobalt Presents / Audioeclectica Show at Corbin Bowl! You will be sad if you miss it!
The very awesome and genre smashing, Genghis Tron, has returned with an upcoming new album , Signal Fire, and first single, “I Am All.” The bands previous album, 2021’s, Dream Weapon, was beyond a welcome back album. In fact it’s one of those albums that the more the years go by, certain aspects of that record have come true.
This new album though, shifts from the apocalyptic dreams of the previous album, and into a very unhinged and volatile new world. Like the last one with the lyrical themes becoming reality, Signal Fire delivers an urgency that is very direct and precise. “I Am All” is not just the first single but first track on the album. This song is heavy and punishing as well as quite the soundtrack to the end times.
Signal Fire arrives June 12 via Relapse Records! I’m very impatiently awaiting this release!
Sweden always seems to have something good in their water when it comes to musicians. It’s really quite stunning how so many great bands can come from one region or area. Formed in Gothenberg, Sweden in 2013, Monolord have become one of stoner/doom metal’s best imports. Monolord has released five full length studio albums since their inception with their sixth and first in five years, Neverending, to be released on June 12 via Relapse Records. The new album as produced and recorded by legendary engineer, Sylvia Massy (Tool, System Of A Down). The first single “You Bastard” is a righteous slab of rifftastic, fuzzy, and crushing exploration into doom and psychedelia. The recording of this song feels so alive as well. It’s a treat to hear a record like this in these days. Personally, I am very much looking forward to what Neverending has to offer as I believe this album is going to reach new heights for Monolord. Be sure to crank the volume on this song!!
Queens Of The Stone Age are one of those bands that have a catalog of albums that are ever evolving. From their debut through their peak into the now, Queens have always been a group to not rest on what they’ve done before. Sure certain things will always be a part of the sound and style of the band but, the opportunity to exist in a different alternative realm, is much more interesting than being generic. And while not every album can be the best, there are those that truly stand out and a couple that really don’t quite hit the mark. Take a moment and delve into this pretty trippy catalog from Queens Of The Stone Age. And while you are listening, find something new to enjoy about these records! And now Audioeclectica’s Definitive Ranking Of The Albums By, Queens Of The Stone Age.
When you have such a distinct voice, hearing it in other bands and songs can be a real treat or pulverizing in both good and bad ways. One such voice is Chester Bennington. His time with Linkin Park literally brought his voice into millions of cars, headphones, houses, parties, arenas and more. Though not known for his guest spots, the ones he did each have their own charm. Check these out and let me know what your favorites are. Enjoy!
About a month as of this writing, the debut album from Held. will be released. Since the beginning of the year, Held. has been unveiling themselves via now three singles and three intense performance videos. The first single “New You Anthem” was right out of the gate a welcome introduction. The catchiness of the riff and the chorus, if that doesn’t strike you, there’s something wrong with you. Seriously, it’s heavy, melodic, packs quite punch to the gut. Then you add in Frank Iero’s guest vocal spot and how his voice hits the perfect counter balance to vocalist/guitarist Douglas Robinson. The second single “Constant Tension” (which of the three released is my favorite. When you get to the bridge of the song, you’ll know why), is a song that could’ve been released during the 90’s evolution of “emo” music. There’s a really cool Sunny Day Real Estate/Jawbox vibe mixed with a bit of a hardcore element. The rhythm section of Josh Eppard and Sal Mignano really shines here. They are beyond tight yet combustable in the best way. I can only imagine them on stage and this song is played. The lyrical connection here is real and very personal. The honesty is pure as you can hear in Douglas again here. “Knifepoint” is the one of the three released that hits the more “alternative” side of the band so far. The syncopated riff/rhythm has a cool push and pull that hits in a very striking way with the vocal as well as the guest spot from Graham Sayle of High Vis.
So here we are at three songs into their debut and it’s shaping up to be quite the explosive one. This combination of Douglas, Sal and Josh sounds even better than you’d think. As a fan of Josh’s playing, he really gets to go for it here in Held. That’s not to say he doesn’t in Coheed And Cambria, you can just hear a different excitement in his playing here. After Douglas left Night Verses, I was pretty bummed not to get to hear him as a part of that band. I really enjoyed the two albums they made and thought they were really on to something. The Ross Robinson produced second album, Into The Vanishing Light, is very underrated and has some truly deeply gritty vocal performances by Douglas. Getting to hear Sal in a different light than The Sleeping is a treat too. As a fan of that band too, you can hear where the roots come from. The sum of the parts here in Held. is going to be something special to see live. I look forward to what’s to come. And let’s just put a proper Los Angeles show out in the universe to happen soon!
