Mastodon

DREAM TOUR/SETLIST: MASTODON, FAILURE & CAVE IN

We all have made lists of bands we’d love to see tour together. The endless possibilities that are out there make for some pretty amazing ideas. There’s one idea I’ve had for quite a while now that I’ve finally put together. I’ve long had this idea in my mind for years, that a Mastodon tour with Failure would be absolutely mind blowing. What a compelling one / two punch. To completely put this tour over the top would be to add Cave In as the opening act.

Each band is phenomenal on their own. Then you combine all three under one venue and you’ve got a recipe for a sonic experience your mind will never forget. Each bands set is full of songs you love and choice deep cuts that you’d not expect.

New Release: Mastodon- Sickle and Peace

Mastodon Announce New Album Hushed and Grim, Share New Song: Listen | Pitchfork

Since the turn of the century when they formed, Mastodon have been one of the best bands to come out. Their evolution as a band is one that is astounding. Had they come out in a different era, they’d probably be one of the biggest bands. Now in 2021, the guys in Mastodon are gearing up to release their ninth studio album, Hushed and Grim. They’ve already released a couple tracks ahead of its release and now they have dropped one of their most jazzy tracks ever with “Sickle and Peace.” There’s a psychedelic doomy jazz sense to this song. It’s one of those songs that in the context of the album will make more sense especially since Mastodon is one of those bands that make “albums.” I’d love to hear this song live at some point during an upcoming tour as I feel like this is going to be one hell of an epic track live.

New Release: Mastodon- Forged By Neron

Mastodon Share New Song 'Forged by Neron'

Mastodon are back with a new track “Forged By Neron” which can be found on the upcoming soundtrack to Dark Nights: Death Metal‘ soundtrack, due out June 18th (digitally) and July 16th (physically). This effort serves as a companion piece to the DC Comics series of the same name, and was executive produced by Tyler Bates. Bates also oversaw the previous ‘Dark Nights: Metal‘ tie-in series. Other notable names on this upcoming soundtrack include Greg Puciato, Chelsea Wolfe, HEALTH with Chino Moreno, Idles and many more. The first one of these soundtracks included songs by Mastodon, Jerry Cantrell and Chino Moreno. This new Mastodon track is pretty damn rocking and finds Mastodon really bringing the riffs! Look forward to their upcoming David Botrill produced album!

New Music Friday

I thought I’d try something new today. Since Friday is now “release day” for new albums and such, I thought it would be a good idea to put together all the songs and or albums that came out today and throughout the week. There is so much music being released these days, it’s hard to keep up sometimes but, with this, there’s a better chance you won’t miss something that came out. So here we go…

Mastodon- Fallen Torches (featuring Scott Kelly of Neurosis):

Spirit In The Room- If You Must:

Justin Stewart Cotta- Longing Is Not Love:

Alain Johannes- If Morning Comes:

Sumac- The Iron Chair:

King Buzzo (Buzz Osborne) with Trevor Dunn- Delayed Clarity:

Vein- 20 Seconds // 20 Hours:

Cover Song Collaboration: Coheed and Cambria, Mastodon, Primus, Tool, Mutoid Man (Rush)- Anthem

Two Minutes To Late Night Cover Rush

During this age of quarantine, there is a lot of free time on musicians hands.  Some are being very productive with writing new records and experimenting with new things. One of the things I’ve noticed is there is a huge flood of covers being done. A lot of them however are pretty meh and bland but, thankfully there is the people at Two Minutes To Late Night to save the day. Most recently, they conjured up a pretty impressive set of players to cover the Rush song “Anthem.” I’m not a big Rush fan but, this was too damn good not to share. Also if you haven’t seen the Rush documentary (I believe it’s still streaming on Netflix) you should check it out. It’s quite good. Anyways, this cover features Danny Carey of Tool on drums, Bill Kelliher of Mastodon on guitar, Les Claypool of Primus on bass, Stephen Brodsky of Cave In/Mutoid Man on guitar, Jordan Olds (aka Gwarsenio Hall) on guitar and Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria on vocals. What a killer job they did on this. Enjoy!

Memorable TV Performances: Mastodon on David Letterman

hqdefault.jpg

10 years ago, Mastodon released their epic masterpiece, Crack The Skye. That album catapulted Mastodon to all sorts of new heights. If you’ve never heard that album, you really should. It’s absolutely incredible. Anyways, during this time, Mastodon started making the rounds of playing on late night TV and their performance of “Oblivion” on the Late Show with David Letterman, was pretty damn good.

Cover Song: Mastodon (Led Zeppelin)- Stairway To Heaven

mastodon-820x820.jpg

Mastodon recently released a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven.” They did this as a tribute to their late manager Nick John, who passed away due to pancreatic cancer. Mastodon was asked by Nick’s wife to play the song at his funeral. Gojira’s Joe Duplantier (who Nick John also managed),  was at the funeral and recorded the band performing the song on his phone. The band afterwards, went and recorded a full studio version of the song. When the song was released, side A featured the studio version while side B featured the phone recording. Mastodon did a phenomenal job of taking this gem of a classic on. They didn’t stray too far from the original but they definitely knocked it out of the park. Brann Dailor is seriously one of the best singers in rock music. That guys got one hell of a voice.
