In 1990, Helmet came on to the scene with their debut album Strap It On. It was hailed by critics at the time as innovative for its explosive, propulsive, riff style. The song “Sinatra” was talked about as moody and atmospheric. With a description like that it’s no wonder that the Deftones would go on to cover this song.

We all know what Maynard is capable of vocally with all the projects he has. I’m sure most of you have heard him on some of the below songs he has guested on. There are a couple out there that are surprising though.
Rage Against The Machine: Know Your Enemy
Tori Amos- Muhammed My Friend
Deftones: Passenger
Replicants: Silly Love Songs
30 Seconds To Mars: Fallen
Jubilee: I Don’t Have An Excuse, I Just Need A Little Help
David Bowie: Bring Me The Disco King
Scott Weiland is one of the best singers in the last 20 years. Even with his antics and other exploits, his voice still resonates well with the masses. What you have below are a few songs Scott has guested on over the years, some known and unknown.
Deftones: RX Queen (White Pony)
The Crystal Method: Murder (You Know It’s Hard) (Tweekend)
The Doors: Break On Through and Five To One (Stoned Immaculate)
Limp Bizkit: Nobody Like You and Hold On (Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish)

Chino Moreno has one of the most distinct voices in the rock music community. His soft whispers, powerful screams, and intriguing melodies can be found on quite a few albums from others. Below is a handful of those.

The 90’s really had a huge impact on my musical taste. There are so many great bands and albums from that time, that deserve to be acknowledged. Quicksand is one of those bands that really deserve attention. Their sound is now considered by many as the pre-cursor to what “post-hardcore” is. Released in 1993 Slip, their debut studio album, is widely considered to be one of the classic records of that genre. The powerful riffs and rhythms drive the collection of songs. Vocally, Walter Schreifels, has a deep raspy voice that really reverberates throughout the songs evoking raw energy. The guitar riffs between Schreifels and Tom Capone are loud, crunchy yet very clear to hear the notes. Alan Cage plays the drums in a subtle heavy way. His knack for hitting harder when necessary is very noticeable. Sergio Vega’s bass playing is thunderous and compliments the rhythm masterfully. Songs like “Fazer,” “Dine Alone,” “Lie and Wait,” and “Transparent” sum up this great album. Take a listen and revel in it!

A couple days ago marked the 1 year death anniversary of Chi Cheng from Deftones. In honor of him the guys in Deftones released a song from the unreleased album EROS. The song is entitled “Smile.” The album was shelved after Chi was involved in a car accident which left him in a coma for years. This song is quite exquisite and explore more of the etherial ambient side of the band. Chi was a very energetic member of the band. His presence alone is very much missed. Sergio Vega (of Quicksand and also a cousin of Chi’s) was brought in after Chi’s accident. I had the pleasure of meeting Chi a couple times and he was one of the nicest most genuine people ever.

So many bands try to capture the true essence of their sound on record. Not too many can achieve that without studio tricks. One of the exceptions to the myth is Atlanta, Georgia’s Big Jesus. This four piece has a knack for big melodies, large walls of sound, and silky vocals. Their debut full length ONE, has all the above and then some. The first track on the album “Cold Fire” has a rhythmic heaviness that has a Cave In feel to it. The song “Again” has a chunkiness that is almost sludgy. “Shrimp” is a more mellow mid tempo jam that has shows off the more delicate side of the band. Closing out their album is “Heaviest Heart,” a song that has a sort of Deftones feel to it’s approach. Their all together sound is deeply rooted in the great alternative bands of the 90’s. Lyrically all the songs are deep and meaningful. This band is truly on the right track and have the material to take on the masses.
