Soundtrack Only Songs: Pantera- Avoid The Light

51VvKMJaAkL.jpg

Back in 2000, Dracula 2000 was released. While the movie was pretty bad, the soundtrack more than made up for it. With songs from bands like System of a Down, Slayer, Disturbed, Static X, and Pantera, this sure made for a killer soundtrack. The Pantera song that was released on the soundtrack wasn’t on any of their albums or a B side to a single. “Avoid The Light” is a very eclectic song for the band. It harks back to their Cowboys From Hell days and shows where they were moving towards on Reinventing The Steel. Anyways, here is Pantera’s “Avoid The Light.”

Video Rank: Mastodon

So Mastodon has released a new album called Emperor Of Sand, and that is quite possibly the album of the year. Needless to say I’ve been in quite the Mastodon mood. Plus it’s been awhile since I’ve done a video rank, so why not do it for Mastodon.

That Was A Bad Idea: Van Halen with Gary Cherone

photo-1998-001.jpg

I remember this story very well actually. I was completely taken aback by the news of this story. On the heels of Sammy Hagar and Van Halen parting ways, it was announced that the band had a new singer, Gary Cherone formerly of Extreme. You remember them, they had that really annoying power ballad “More Than Words.” This move certainly sparked many questions and debates about the state of Van Halen, the band. By the time the band released Van Halen III, it marked a real departure of the band’s sound and focused more on ballad type songs than rock. Not only did the fans not like the album, critics panned the album as well.

There are some theories on why this album is so bad and the decision to hire Gary. It’s thought that this album was a sort of Eddie Van Halen solo album. It was disclosed that Eddie had played a majority of bass and drums on the album, as well as taking a couple songs himself to sing lead vocals on. It should also be noted that around this time is when Eddie was dealing with a serious addiction problem. So we know he wasn’t thinking straight. I really want to know whose idea it was to bring Gary Cherone into the band. Not to completely rip Gary to shreds, as he does have a good rock voice, he shouldn’t have even been thought of for this role. This was a bad idea all around and it leaves a bit of a stain on the band’s discography.

Band Of The Week: Youth Code

12715956_922323664512501_309100715434444853_o.jpg

Over the last few years electronic music has made a strong impact among many people. There has been a sort of “craze” about it and the scene has become flush with many different groups and genres. I’ve always dug on certain aspects of electronic music like, industrial and trip hop. Recently I saw a band live that has really reinvigorated my love for industrial music. That band is Youth Code. Formed in 2012 by Ryan William George and Sara Taylor, Youth Code has taken the scene by storm. By combining elements of industrial, electronica, and a bit of a dance vibe, Youth Code delivers a relentless and punishing sound that will make you bang your head and dance.

When I saw them a few months back, they absolutely stole the show and left me wanting more. Their live performances are intense and energetic. One thing that they have that their other peers lack are lyrics that really grab you just as the music does. It’s beyond refreshing to hear this style of music done so well. So do yourself a favor and check out Youth Code.

Spirit In The Room is one of my favorite bands I’ve written about. Dennis Sanders is a river of inspiration and continuously keeps impressing me with what he puts out. This past week Dennis put out a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” that is quite good, and I feel compelled to share it with you all!

Enjoy!!

Album Rank: Gojira

Gojira are one of the most promising bands to come out since the turn of the century. Like Mastodon, Gojira keeps getting better and better. They are one of the few bands to continually evolve without losing sight of who they are. Which brings me to this album rank. As you’ll hear you can really tell how good Gojira has become as the albums go on.

Songs In Film: Aerosmith- Sweet Emotion in Dazed and Confused

MPW-40398.jpg

I’ve come to the conclusion that Aerosmith are part of what I call “Greatest Hits Bands.” Meaning that they’ve got some really great songs but, their albums as a whole just aren’t “that” good. Since I started this new feature, I’ve got a huge list of great times a song was used in a film and Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” during the opening credits of the very awesome Dazed and Confused is perfect.

Band Of The Week (updated)- He Whose Ox Is Gored

15823714_1329433170410989_4025386276280808496_n.jpg

There are a handful of bands that I’ve written about here that really get me excited. One of those bands is He Whose Ox Is Gored. Ever since I first heard them, I’ve become enthralled by what they do. This four piece from Seattle is starting to really take the underground music scene by storm. Their mix of doom, shoegaze, and ambience are perfectly blended into their heavy and emotional sound. Their full length album The Camel, The Lion, The Child is still in constant rotation on my stereo and turntable. One thing that I really love about He Whose Ox Is Gored is the way the sparse vocals resonate through their songs. The lyrics and vocals add another dimension to their hypnotic sound. It’s almost as though the vocals invoke a whole different beast.

He Whose Ox Is Gored is the type of band that can transcend just being another heavy band. They have all the parts to make them not only stand out among their peers but, also the talent to really leave their own mark and inspire other bands. Do yourself a favor and buy their album and play it loud and proudly. You’ll thank me later for it.

The Cure is one of my all time favorite bands and “Fascination Street” is my favorite song by them as well. I was searching for a cover to share with you all and I came across this gem of a bad idea. Here is Chimaira covering The Cure’s “Fascination Street.”

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
