It’s an exciting day if you are a Chelsea Wolfe fan as her first solo single since 2019’s Birth Of Violence has been released. “Dusk” is now upon us and a North American tour has been announced. The trek kicks off in 2024 on February 27th in San Diego and wraps up March 30th in Los Angeles, with stops throughout the U.S. and a few dates up in Canada. “Dusk” is a bit of new territory for Chelsea as this song has a bit of a gothy trip hop vibe to it, which I’m quite enjoying. News of a new album looks to be on the way as it was also announced that Loma Vista Recordings will be releasing new music from Chelsea Wolfe.

New Release: Filth Is Eternal- Pressure Me

It’s always exciting when a band you really like/love releases something new. So it’s no shock that I’m pretty damn stoked that my friends in Filth Is Eternal have released a new single, “Pressure Me” from their forthcoming new album Find Out, which comes out September 29 via MNRK. This new song is grungy gut punch that’s infectious and ferocious. Their upcoming album was produced by Paul Fig who has worked with Jerry Cantrell, Alice In Chains, etc but, is also remembered by me most of all as being a member of Amen! Filth Is Eternal is a band that should be on your radar. Not only do they have the chops with their songs but, their live show is one hell of a beast on its own. Do yourself a favor and dig into this Filth!

New Release: Venera- Hologram (feat VOWWS)

Last month, I saw a video floating around different sites that had zero information, other than the title of “Swarm,” there was no pre-sale, simply the three-minute single released in tandem with a mysterious screed and a pulsating black-and-white video. I listened/watched it a few times and it definitely left me intrigued. Well the mystery has been revealed. Introducing Venera, a new group featuring Korn’s James “Munky” Shaffer and composer/filmmaker, Chris Hunt. Today, the pair have released a new song “Hologram” which features piano and vocals of Rizz from VOWWS. Speaking on “Hologram” Shaffer and Hunt, explained: “’Hologram’ emerged quickly from our first session together. A nearly unchanging drum machine pattern nested in warbling guitars. We don’t interact much with holograms but they seem to offer an image of an alluring emptiness and light, which resonates well with the universe we are driven to explore.” “Hologram” is a really intriguing track. It has a bit of a trip-hop vibe mixed with a bit of Depeche Mode and a smidge of Sade. Several guests join Hunt and Shaffer on Venera. Drummer Deantoni Parks (Mars Volta, John Cale) plays on “Erosion” and “Disintegration,” HEALTH’s Jacob Duzsik contributes vocals on “Ochre” and Alain Johannes lends his voice to “Triangle.” Their self-titled, debut album arrives Oct. 13 via Ipecac Recordings.

New Release: Thoughtcrimes- Natural Imprudence
Back in August of 2022, Thoughtcrimes released their full length debut, Altered Pasts. That album quickly became a favorite of mine and it’s still been in rotation. Now, a new song has been unleashed upon us and it’s a banger! Speaking about “Natural Imprudence,” Billy Rymer said “The initial inspiration came about with a conversation Russ and I had about HM-2 distortion. He then brought his Evil Ned pedal to my place and we made a demo. This is probably the fastest we have written and released a track. We are all excited to share something that is still fresh even to us.” That being said, it’s pretty awesome to get a surprise new track from Thoughtcrimes. Now all that is needed is a proper Los Angeles show date!

The Other Side: Nightcars- Kind Of Relief
My tastes in music has changed a lot over the years. Perhaps it comes with getting older and tastes change or it could just be that I hear something that hits at the right time and place. A little while back I was introduced to a band by a friend of mine that was a bit different from my norm. It all still fit within the things I enjoy but, this had something a bit more uplifting and optimistic about it. Allow me to introduce you to the band, Nightcars. Comprised of Nick Marchena (vocals/guitar), Cial Rodriguez (guitar), Adrian Rego (bass) and Mebs Rosales (keys/synths), Nightcars propels a powerful groove that is elevated by rich bass lines, complex rhythms, distinct synth and keys, all the while being accompanied by funk/jazz/rock guitars with pop accents that make the city light up at night. Their music and songs set up the soundtrack for a great sunsetting drive or even a stargazing night. There is a “sound” to their style that keeps you coming back. Perhaps there’s a bit of a nostalgic vibe to their approach, which hits at the right feels. No matter how you put it, Nightcars has the soundtrack to your destination.

New Release: Fearing- I Was So Alive
For many years now, I’ve been quite keen on the post-punk genre. When I look back on it, you could say that I’ve been drawn into it all at a very early age with bands such as The Cure, Joy Division and early Depeche Mode. Post Punk these days has expanded into many sub-genres as with any genre. One of the sub-genres that I am pulled into is the “Dark Wave” side of things. There’s something about the incorporation of a bit of New Wave into Post Punk that is exciting and intriguing. That being said, I’d like to introduce you to the band, Fearing. Their Dark Wave/Post Punk sound adds a bit more to the genre with interesting dynamics and melodies. There’s also this really cool contrast between the darker side of the genre and a pop tinge that gives the songs a variety that you don’t usually get with bands of this genre. On September 29th, Fearing will release their second full length album, Destroyer. The first single off the album, “I Was So Alive” is a brooding post punk jam with a shimmering light that shifts with the song. Fearing is the type of band within this genre that keeps evolving in a manner that keeps their roots intact but, changes just enough to make their music stand out.

New Release: Repentance- Blinded By Fear
On September 1, 2023, Chicago’s own Repentance will be releasing their debut album, The Process Of Human Demise. That’s a pretty metal title! Ahead of the release, Repentance have released a couple songs with the latest being the absolute banger “Blinded By Fear.” The first single released “Withered And Decayed” is another head banger and features new Fear Factory singer Milo Silvestro. Repentance has a sound that is very metal with bits of groove metal, Swedish Melo Death, and a tinge of hardcore. The Process Of Human Demise was produced by Alex Lackner at Accelerated Sound. Mix and mastered by Chris Collier at CMC21 Productions. I’m for one am looking forward to what is to come with Repentance.
