Band Of The Week: Haunted Horses

Since I started Audioeclectica, I’ve noticed that certain cities have a wealth of music bursting at the seams to be heard. Seattle has long been a city with a plethora of music waiting to be heard. Which brings me to the band of the week, Haunted Horses. I’ve heard about this band for a bit now and they are quite a band. Haunted Horses is an industrial punk duo/trio from Seattle made up of Colin Dawson and Myke Pelly. Their sound is this mix of chaotic noise and rhythms paired with an onslaught of distorted keys, guitars, bass and thundering drums. The band’s music stretches between post-punk, noise core, industrial and even a bit of a gothic/new wave sound. Most recently Haunted Horses recruited long time friend Brian McClelland of Filth Is Eternal and He Whose Ox Is Gore to add another layer of dynamic heaviness to the already captivating live show and sound. The time for a band like Haunted Horses is now. The element of danger that comes with their live show is much needed in a very sterile time we live in. Plus having music that gives you the push/pull of tension to truly bring you in, makes Haunted Horses a band to definitely watch out for. On The Rise: Alex Baird

The new breed of singer/songwriters are interesting. Instead of falling back into the comfort of classic influences, the youth of today have been stretching their wings and finding new outlets to be inspired by. I’d like to introduce you all to Alex Baird. Alex isn’t your typical singer songwriter. Following the lead from her late grandmother, Peggi Griffith, an acclaimed torch singer known as the ‘Seattle Darling,’ Alex’s debut is quite the collection of songs. The album is rounded out by new performances of tunes written and recorded in the ’60s by Alex’s late grandmother. And instead of the usual run of the mill type of album you think you’d get this is where it gets interesting. Taking cues from the pop world especially from the age of the 50’s & 60’s and then incorporating a bit of jazz standards into the songs, gives the album a whole new life on its own. Think of it in terms of if Norah Jones and Carole King combined forces, that’s what you get with up and comer Alex Baird. Her debut album, Lemon Tree, is out NOW!

Band Of The Week: Tangients

I love it when I hear a band and while listening to their songs I get to that moment of “ahhhh.” A while back I came across a post punk band that realy intrigued me. The other elements they had in their music like shoegaze, dream pop, and even the bit of a pop sensibility really peaked my interest and the rest was history. Allow me to introduce you to Tangients. This post-punk-gaze duo is absolutely awesome. Vocalist Chelsea Ray has this intensity to the way she sings that you must hear to believe. The sonic textures of guitars, bass, noise, melody and ambience by Be Hussey adds to the incredible intensity of the vocals. I’ve tried to come up with a good comparison of what I’d describe Tangients as and I think I’ve come up with quite a good one. Think Siouxie and The Banshees mixed with a bit of Bjork, The Cure and a tinge of Portishead. Band Of The Week: Speed Of Light

The whole point of starting Audioeclectica was to share great new music and bands with you all. There are so many good bands out there that deserve the attention and support. With that in mind, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to Speed Of Light. This power trio (ages 18, 17 and 15) plays hard-hitting rock n roll with a righteous slab of punk rock. Since their inception they’ve been playing stages all over Southern California and destroying them. I’ve had the pleasure to see a couple of their shows and each time they leave me in awe. Their style of unrelenting rock and right attitude makes them a force to be reckoned with in the rock scene. I personally can’t wait for more from Speed Of Light. Everything about this band is what you would want in a great rock band. Here’s to a lot more from Speed Of Light and them conquering the rock world! Definitely head to The Federal in North Hollywood on Saturday, March 12th to see them rock the house!

Album Review: Deaf Club- Productive Disruption

Deaf Club just released an unrelenting force of nature with their album, Productive Disruption. The band features Justin Pearson (The Locust, Dead Cross, Planet B), Brian Amalfitano (ACxDC), Scott Osment (Weak Flesh), Jason Klein (Run With The Hunted), and Tommy Meehan (The Manx, Chum Out!) and their savage sound comes with a blastbeat-centric hardcore punk assault channeling crust, thrash, and grind with a touch of metal. Productive Disruption, was was recorded by Alex Estrada and Tommy Meehan and they captured the true essence of the band, raw, live and uncompromising. There is real sense or urgency when listening to this album. The intensity and passion delivered with the performances of each member proves that this isn’t for the weak hearted. The songs are written and played at breakneck speed but, with the right amount of space between to catch your breath before the onslaught continues. To accompany the release of the album the band performed the whole thing live and when you watch it, the energy radiating from the screen will start pumping your blood faster and the next thing you know a full on mosh pit will erupt from your seat. Deaf Club have started 2022 album releases off with an utter bashing to your head in a total good way!

Band Of The Week: The Moon Rocks

I love it when I go to see a band I don’t know anything about and they blow me away. A couple weeks back a good friend of mine went out to go see a show and we wound up being completely taken by surprise by a band. That band was a three piece with more energy than everyone in the venue had combined. So, with that in mind let me introduce you to The Moon Rocks. Their punk rock style and energy mixed with 90’s rock and a tinge of pop have made The Moon Rocks one of Los Angeles’s best bands to see live. Pure, their debut record is a righteous slab of rock music that has been missing for sometime. Singer/guitarist Babsy leads the group with her unapologetic energy and outstanding skills on guitar and power vocals. The rhythm section of Cola on bass and Bobo on drums are beyond tight but have the right swagger to play loose to keep up with Babsy. They are tearing up venues all over Los Angeles so go make a point to see The Moon Rocks live, you won’t be disappointed.

Band Of The Week: Killer Hill

Ever since I heard Cream when I was a little kid, the three-piece band has always intrigued me. To be able to get all that intensity and volume with just a trio is something spectacular. There is a new three piece band on my radar and I’m really digging what they are up to. Allow me to introduce you to Killer Hill, a new trio featuring two members of Helmet – guitarist/vocalist Dan Beeman and bassist Dave Case – along with drummer Pete Beeman whose resumé includes Amphetamine Reptile greats Guzzard. These guys pack one hell of a punch. Taking their cues from bands like Mastodon, Red Fang and Helmet, it’s no wonder that Killer Hill’s new EP, Frozen Head rocks. The six songs on the EP are brute alt rock force. The riffs are chunky and groovy while the rhythm section grinds and pummels. The first song released “Bent” is a groovy/thrashy fun time that live will be a beast. Killer Hill is a pretty rad band and I’m very intrigued to hear what else they do!

Band Of The Week: Down Again

Since the turn of the century the post hardcore genre has been at the forefront of rock music. Bands like Brand New, Thrice, Circa Survive, Underoath and Manchester Orchestra come to mind immediately. One band that has come on my radar that I’ve really been enjoying is, Down Again. Hailing from the California Bay Area, this these guys are making waves. These longtime friends have crafted songs that touch on the struggles of questioning faith, loss, infidelity, and mental health. Their latest song “Predisposed” is a post-hardcore banger! Down Again is the type of post-hardcore band that gives a sense of hope and in today’s world that is much needed!

Band Of The Week: Handle

I’ve long been intrigued by bands that take experimental chances to create something interesting. It can be hit or miss but when it hits, you know it immediately. Combining different influences and inspirations in music the end result can be pretty damn good. With that in mind, allow me to introduce you to the band of the week, Handle. Hailing from Southern California, this four piece band is just getting started but already have released a killer single with “Spirit Channeler.” Listening to this song you can pick up on bits of their influences like The Mars Volta/At The Drive In, Circa Survive/Saosin, some Glassjaw and a little Thrice. I look forward to what else Handle does. Definitely give them a listen and if you are in the LA area this weekend, get to The Federal in NoHo and see them along with Centershift, Arc Angles and The Tragic Radicals!

Canada, over the last few years have been pretty consistent on exporting good bands. One of those bands that I’ve really come to enjoy is Actors. This Post-Punk/New Wave esque band have really taken the genre by storm. Their new album, Acts Of Worship (Out Oct 1), is drenched in hard driving beats, huge hooks, and soothing atmosphere. Their modern approach to the classic sounds, are reaching new heights. The pop sensibilities that come via their influences really shine on the album. When you listen to the new album as well as their previous, 2018’s It Will Come To You, you can really hear the evolution of the bands sound and writing abilities. Actors is a band that will be at the forefront of the Post-Punk genre in no time!
