Soundtrack Only Songs: Alice In Chains- A Little Bitter

The summer of 1993 was supposed to be huge for Arnold Schwarzenegger and the movie Last Action Hero. Instead Jurassic Park swallowed up the competition that summer. Even though Last Action Hero bombed, it was still a fun movie. The one real saving grace to that movie though was the soundtrack. In particular the Alice In Chains song “A Little Bitter” which was released exclusively on the soundtrack and not available anywhere else until their box set came out in the late 90’s. Enjoy this gem of a song.

Anticipated Albums: Sevendust- All I See Is War

Now on their 12th album (yes 12, crazy I know) Sevendust is back doing what Sevendust does, and that’s bring the ROCK. Their upcoming album, All I See Is War (out May 11 via Rise Records), is shaping up to a bit of a continuation of all the things fans of the band enjoy based on the two songs released so far, Dirty and Not Original. One thing that needs to be mentioned time and time again about Sevendust is how great of a singer Lajon Witherspoon is. That guy, man, he’s got so much soul in that voice and it’s bleeding all over this album. Check out what they have in store for us all.

List: One Album Bands

I was thinking the other day while looking for something to listen to about how many bands are out there that have only one album. Whether it’s by choice a la The Sex Pistols or because the band was dropped/broke up or even a one time project, I thought it would be quite interesting to compile a list of all those bands and albums.

End Of Album Songs: Metallica

What else is there to say about Metallica that hasn’t already been said? Over the past few days I’ve been on a Metallica kick, and while listening back to all their albums (yes even St. Anger), I noticed how strong their ending songs all are. From their newest, “Spit Out The Bone,” all the way back to “Metal Militia” and probably the best one “The Outlaw Torn,” there is no doubting Metallica knows how to properly end an album.

Unsung Masterpieces: Danzig III- How The Gods Kill

The year is 1992 and most of the musical world is caught up in the Seattle sound. It seems as though metal and music of that ilk has been swept aside. But was it really? No it wasn’t, instead it quietly stayed in the shadows and began to create it’s own entity just as punk music did in the 80’s and early 90’s. During this time many bands found a new way to evolve and grow to create albums that would become monumental and impactful. One such album is Danzig III: How The Gods Kill.

Live Review: Old Blood, With Our Arms To The Sun, Interstelar at The Silverlake Lounge

When I go to a show these days there are a few things I look for in the band that’s on stage. First is the music. Do the bands have the ability to transition their music from their album to a live setting? Second is their performance. Do the bands really give it their all and let the music and their art take over to allow them to unleash that inner beast? Third is the lasting effect. When the band is done are you left in awe over what you just saw or are you left feeling meh? Now some might consider this criteria as elitist but, when you’ve been to as many shows as I have and seen the amount of bands I have, you need to be able to see through the bands that really have it and don’t. Friday night at the Silverlake Lounge was quite the eclectic mix of bands and music and all three bands I was there to see brought something different to the stage.

Band Of The Week: Old Blood

When art and music come together the results can sometimes vary but, when that right blend is poured out on to a canvas or in this case music, everything just comes together. I’d like to introduce you to Old Blood. Taking influence and inspiration from Classic Rock, Metal, Trip Hop, Desert Rock, Stoner Metal, Doom, Sludge and bits of Jazz, Old Blood have created a style which they call “Acid Doom.” Their debut self titled album is chock full of head bobbing rhythms, charging riffs and vocals that cut like a diamond. They stand out from their peers not just musically but with their artistic stage show, leaving those in attendance with a sense of being a part of something more than just a show. Do yourself a favor and check out what fresh takes Old Blood has to offer.

Tribute: Caleb Scofield of Cave In

On March 28 the music world lost one of the most talented musicians. Caleb Scofield, the bassist for the underrated band Cave In as well as Old Man Gloom and his own project Zozobra, tragically passed away at age 39, in a devastating car accident in New Hampshire, when his truck burst into flames after crashing at high speed into a toll plaza. According to the report, police stated the truck was traveling north on the F.E. Everett Turnpike shortly after 1PM when he attempted to change lanes before entering the toll plaza and ended up crashing into the barrier.

Caleb was a tremendous player and will be greatly missed. His work in Cave In especially influenced and inspired countless bass players over the years. Personally, I borrowed many things from Caleb including his bass tone and that guttural scream of his. I’m glad I was able to see Cave In and Old Man Gloom. This is a great loss for those of us that are fans as well as his family and friends. There is a donation page up to help offset the funeral costs and for his wife and 2 kids. Condolences to his family and friends.

Cover Song: Black Map (Failure)- Stuck On You

I’m sure most of you are like me and get all giddy when you hear a band you really like do a cover of another band you like and that cover is really good. During their recent tour with Pop Evil, Black Map has been doing pre-show meet and greets and mini acoustic sets. At their show at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, Black Map’s Ben Flanagan (bass/vocals) and Mark Engles (guitar/vocals), pulled out a surprise cover of Failure’s “Stuck On You” and it turned out great.
