ALBUM RANK UPDATED: BUSH

10) Black And White Rainbows: This record is the one that’s interesting in the catalog. On one hand it’s intriguing as it seems to explore more of what The Science Of Things was doing with electronic music. On the other it’s just not a well constructed album. The inner turmoil of Gavin shows through on this one a lot as it was the album after the divorce. I do like the introspective nature of this one but, as a whole it just falls flat and short. That’s not to say there aren’t good songs on Black and White Rainbows. FINAL SCORE: 4/10

09) The Sea Of Memories: The comeback album that was released in 2011. While it was refreshing to have the band back and the first single “The Sound Of Winter” was a welcome re-introduction, The Sea Of Memories is just an ok album. I distinctly remember hearing an early version of I believe it was “All My Life” that was very rock driven and classic Bush sounding, then the final album version was a complete 180 from the original. Again, good songs are found on this album but, as a whole and as a comeback album, this one leave some more to be desired.
FINAL SCORE: 5/10

08) Golden State: The bands last album featuring the original lineup. This album came out in 2001 and actually has found some new life in the over twenty-five years since its release. The first single “The People That We Love” was originally called “Speed Kills” but, since 9/11 had happened, so many bands were forced to change titles of songs. Also, the musical climate at the time had drastically changed. By the time Golden State had been released, the world was upside down and people were looking for something else. While, there are good songs here and some that hark back to the Sixteen Stone era, this was the end of the band for a time.
FINAL SCORE: 5/10

07) I Beat Loneliness: The bands tenth studio album and it’s good! This one continues the more “heavier” side of Bush, that was found on the last two albums, The Kingdom and The Art Of Survival. I Beat Loneliness though, strikes more at an optimistic angle of things lyrically. It’s an introspective album while also being a very positivity driven record. While the album might be front loaded to a point, the back half really grows on you over time and makes for a complete listen. This is a good album and is the proper spiritual followup to The Science Of Things.
FINAL SCORE: 8/10

06) Man On The Run: I really enjoyed this album when it came out and still do to this day. In a cool way, there are lots of Sixteen Stone and Razorblade Suitcase type songs on here. The songs on this record are steps up in a big way from The Sea Of Memories. In fact, had Man On The Run been the comeback album, that would’ve been better. That’s just my opinion though. This album reaches back to a more “rock driven” vibe and style. Sure there are electronics on it but it’s a very rock album. The production on this one feels more “alive” too!
FINAL SCORE: 8/10

05) The Science Of Things: This album is a grower. If you are like me and was really into Sixteen Stone and Razorblade Suitcase, when The Science Of Things arrived, it felt like a “huh, what’s this” album. Though, over time, this album has really become a standout in the catalog. There’s a ton of great songs on this album and it’s full of choice deep cuts. There’s a vulnerability on this album that is like an undercurrent. Seriously, albums like this in a catalog definitely need to be listened to more.
FINAL SCORE: 8.5/10

04) The Kingdom: This album is great. Seriously, the first time I heard this record, I knew this was going to put Bush back into the fold. The first single “Bullet Holes” damn that’s a good song. The whole album start to finish is great. The Kingdom is one of those albums that shows there is still life in this band and there is more to come in a whole new and invigorated way. I’m not kidding when I say this is really good start to finish. The one thing I’d really switch about this album is I’d flip the songs “Flowers On A Grave” and “The Kingdom” on the sequencing. It just makes the album flow better!
FINAL SCORE: 9/10

03) Sixteen Stone: The debut album that changed it all. I still think this album is fantastic. The songs are timeless and classic. More than likely most of you out there have heard this album especially the singles. While the singles were everywhere when this album came out, the deep cuts on here are stellar. Especially the song “Alien,” which is one that needs to be in the bands set! What else is there to say about Sixteen Stone? Sure things are overplayed but, I’d much rather hear “Glycerine” for the 10,000th time than the generic crap you hear on the radio today!
FINAL SCORE: 9/10

02) The Art Of Survival: I’m sure this is a shock to some but, if you haven’t heard The Art Of Survival yet, you’re missing out. What an album. Truly, this record is superb. Start to finish there isn’t one song on this album that feels out of place or anything. The heavy moments are heavy be it musically or lyrically. The somber moments really tug at the heart strings. There’s a deepness to this whole album while at the same time it makes a statement. This is the band’s ninth studio album and good golly is it one that should be listened to and in collections!
FINAL SCORE: 10/10

01) Razorblade Suitcase: This is the best Bush album. You can argue with me all you want, this is The One! As good as Sixteen Stone is, Razorblade Suitcase just takes the cake. The way these songs and the Steve Albini production hit, it’s otherworldly. The element of being “live” is throughout this one. The gravelly vocals of Gavin are at the forefront in a great way. The pure emotion heard via the vocals and instruments is so good. I love albums like that that basically strip things down to the core and are built back up. The songs on this one too just hit in a way that shows growth and evolution. There’s a reason why Razorblade Suitcase is regarded as such a great album. Take a good long listen to this one if you haven’t in a long time!
