New Release: Stone Temple Pilots- Roll Me Under

Stone Temple Pilots have released another new song from their upcoming self titled album due out March 16. It’s very well known that no one will ever come close to Scott Weiland and his talent, melodies, and lyrics, that’s just irreplaceable. Stone Temple Pilots seem to have found the right guy for the job though. On the two songs released so far, “Meadow” and the new one “Roll Me Under” Jeff Gutt fits the profile of what the next singer of STP should sound like. He’s right in the range vocally of Scott so it won’t be a stretch for him to sing the older songs. The new song “Roll Me Under” sounds like a classic STP song. At least it’s not anything as bad as their work with Chester Bennington.

Stone Temple Pilots during their career wrote some of the best closing songs. The ones from Core (Where The River Goes), Purple (Kitchenware and Candybars), and Number 4 (Atlanta) are all cemented in my mind when it comes to great album closers. Each one of these songs is the perfect compliment to those great albums, especially “Kitchenware and Candybars,” and “Atlanta.”

I really don’t understand why this keeps happening. There seems to be a trend nowadays of taking a classic song and then a very unoriginal/uninspiring takes said song and absolutely ruins it. Recently, Avenged Sevenfold released a cover of the classic and very profound “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd. I don’t even need to say anymore but, I have to say that this is probably one of the worst covers I’ve ever heard. Their version reminded be that Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit and Johnny Reznick from the Goo Goo Dolls did a really bad version of this song too.

So which one is worse?

That Was A Bad Idea: Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington

We live in a very strange time. Some bands try to stay relevant with a revamped lineup. Though most of the time, the new lineup just doesn’t cut it. A great example of this occurred a couple years back when, Stone Temple Pilots recruited Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington to front the band after they fired Scott Weiland. The band with Chester made a surprise appearance at a KROQ radio festival, and left many in the crowd wondering “What the hell?” This utterly disgusting idea was not just a bad idea but, it also tarnished the legacy of STP. Granted Scott was struggling again with his demons but, come on, picking Chester is like the equivalent of picking Alvin form Alvin and the Chipmunks to be the singer. The band would put out a terrible EP called High Rise, and they would tour, playing to half empty venues and mildly curious fans. I’m sure there were people out there that dug on it, but seriously, how can this be called Stone Temple Pilots without Scott?

Scott is no longer with us but, he left quite an impact on not the rock world but music in general. His lyrics, melodies and voice will always be remembered. I had hoped that STP and Scott would have one more chance at it before he died but, that didn’t come to fruition.

Take a listen to this wretchedly bad idea, and you’ll understand why this sucked.

Ultimate Set List: Stone Temple Pilots

I had the pleasure of seeing Stone Temple Pilots a few times in my life. When I saw them Scott was always on his game. The one thing that kind of bothered me about the show was the set list. The songs that were chosen to play were mainly just the “hits.” I had hoped that each time they would play some deep cuts, but that didn’t happen. Even though Scott has left us, here is what I would have loved to hear at a show.

Op Ed: Stone Temple Pilots Take A Break

The wounds are still fresh and the scabs haven’t even begun to form. Now is not the time. Since Scott Weiland’s passing late last year, the surviving members of Stone Temple Pilots have taken it upon themselves to continue on. On one hand I totally understand their need and want to get back out there, but it’s just too soon. Their failed attempt to move on while Scott was still alive was atrocious. Their picking of Chester Bennington was awful. Have you seen the footage of it? I mean seriously, what are you guys thinking? The clips that I saw just showed Chester trying to emulate Scott all the way down to dying his hair pink, and swaying and moving on stage just like Scott would. Not too mention that Chester’s voice is too high and sounds nasally. It’s as though they created a tribute band already with the addition of Chester. At least when the band took a hiatus in the 90’s, the guys had the decency to start a new group under a different name. Remember Talk Show?

With enough time, I think that people would welcome an STP return. Look at Alice In Chains. When Layne passed away, they all did their own things and came back when enough time had passed. Granted there were quite a few doubters, but those that took the time to see the new Alice, saw that it’s a breath of fresh air that does the band justice. Jerry, Sean and Mike found the right guy in William DuVall. And now people are loving what William has done for the band.

What I’m saying is that now isn’t the time to get back out there. Let the people have the chance to get over Scott’s passing. Dean, Robert and Eric take some time and do something else. By getting STP going again, you are tarnishing the memory of what a great band you were. All people will think is that who ever you pick to sing for the band, it isn’t Scott and won’t come close. Start up Army Of Anyone again. I’m sure Richard Patrick from Filter would be down to get that rolling again. Or just start a new band and call it something else. You can play a few songs from your STP catalog, but don’t make an entire set from it. With enough time the wounds will heal enough for you guys to get the band back together with the right person.

As it says in the song “Creep”… “Take time with a wounded hand, cause it likes to heal.”

Tribute: Scott Weiland

The music community lost one of the greatest voices last night. Scott Weiland’s voice, presence and words will now forever stand the test of time. Scott’s brilliant melodies could give you chills throughout your body. The way he sang and put himself out there with his words made him something special. His slithering dancing inspired by the likes of David Bowie and Iggy Pop, allowed you to really get in the groove of the music and feel like you were in the song. Through Scott’s career with Stone Temple Pilots, he carved out his place amongst the other bands during his time. He had the ability to reach so many people. Once STP released their classic and in my opinion ultimate masterpiece Purple, you knew that Scott was the real deal. Even his debut solo album 12 Bar Blues was a unique experience and really gave you insight to who Scott was.

I had the pleasure of seeing STP a few times in my life. Any time I saw them, Scott was on his game and delivered great performances. Velvet Revolver was a different story. So I just rather relive my moments with STP to remember Scott by.

When I heard the news of his passing last night, it really caught me off guard. We all knew that this was bound to happen, but the fact that it occurred now, just really bummed me out. It’s truly a beautiful feeling to be inspired and influenced by someone like Scott. Sure he had his demons and other personality traits that might not have been the greatest, but he sure could write great songs. Thankfully there is still the music that will continue on.

Here’s to Scott. Thank you for all the years of great music. May he find the peace he deserves.

Cover Thursday: Stone Temple Pilots (The Doors)- Break On Through [To The Other Side]

The Doors are huge part of my musical upbringing. Whenever I come across a band covering them, I am always compelled to check it out. Most of the time though it sucks. Though any time Scott Weiland puts his vocals on top of a Doors song, it sounds wonderful. Which brings me to this version of Break On Through. It’s got a different arrangement that helps make it a little more STP, while still keeping it classic Doors.
