Album Review: Chelsea Wolfe- She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She

There comes a time in the evolution of each artist where the sum of everything developed, explored, and thought about comes together in a cohesive statement that not only puts a true stamp on a body of work but, also leans into the future of where it’s all going. A perfect example of this is the latest album by Chelsea Wolfe entitled She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She. There is a comfort to the darkness that encases this and all her albums but, with this one it’s grasp is one that holds on and settles so delicately underneath the skin.

From the moment the album begins with “Whispers In The Echo Chamber,” the spell casting melodies enriched by the lush embrace of a sound that pulls from electronica, trip hop, industrial, darkwave, post-punk and more give this album the pronounced rebirth of Chelsea Wolfe. Working with longtime collaborators Ben Chisholm, Bryan Tulao and Jess Gowrie, and the addition of producer Dave Sitek (from TV On The Radio), She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She reaches new levels that are quite inqusitive as the thematic elements of the album blossom into dense stories that keep you coming back. The album continues it’s ambitious and adventurous journey with songs that lend a hand towards self realization and shedding skin like “House Of Self-Undoing,” “Everything Turns Blue,” and “Tunnel Lights.” By the time you’ve reached “The Liminal” there is a turn towards unveiling bits of light and toys with your heart strings. “Eyes Like Nightshade” has a Depeche Mode vibe to it that allows this song to slither around you. The next couple of songs “Salt” and “Unseen Wound” have a gloominess to them that build up to the very impressive and heart wrenching “Place In The Sun.” As the album comes to a close with “Dusk,” there is definitely a sense of understanding and almost a peaceful calm that settles into a clarity or focus on an optimistic outlook.

The tension created during the 42 minutes of the album is truly a defining moment for Chelsea, Ben, Jess and Bryan. This album is one of those that is not only cathartic and filled with dark yet positive energy, it’s one that won’t leave your mind. I spent a good amount of time combing through this album and letting it just take me where it wanted me to go. That feeling you get from listening to an album that really feels timeless is transcendent. Which interestingly enough is a theme found throughout the album. Funny how that all comes together in the end. What an album. I can only imagine what was left on the cutting room floor. Do yourself a favor and listen to this album multiple times. Put headphones on, light a candle and seriously just let it take you away!

New Release: Chelsea Wolfe- Whispers In The Echo Chamber

About a month ago, Chelsea Wolfe released “Dusk” from her upcoming new album. Today, we have further details on the album, She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She, which will be out February 9, 2024 and the first single “Whispers In The Echo Chamber” has been released. Speaking on the song Chelsea said “This song is a rebirth. It’s my sincere hope that this song and ultimately the full album will help inspire others to empower themselves and step into their authenticity. I’m right there with you on that journey- as I wrote these songs, they demanded to be lived.” I look forward to this new chapter in the catalog of Chelsea Wolfe!

New Release: Chelsea Wolfe- Dusk

It’s an exciting day if you are a Chelsea Wolfe fan as her first solo single since 2019’s Birth Of Violence has been released. “Dusk” is now upon us and a North American tour has been announced. The trek kicks off in 2024 on February 27th in San Diego and wraps up March 30th in Los Angeles, with stops throughout the U.S. and a few dates up in Canada. “Dusk” is a bit of new territory for Chelsea as this song has a bit of a gothy trip hop vibe to it, which I’m quite enjoying. News of a new album looks to be on the way as it was also announced that Loma Vista Recordings will be releasing new music from Chelsea Wolfe.

Alternate Versions: Mrs. Piss- Self Surgery (LIVE)

Sargent House - Mrs. Piss

This is one of my favorite side projects I’ve heard in quite a while. If you aren’t familiar with Mrs. Piss you have been missing out. Comprised of Chelsea Wolfe (vocals/guitar) and Jess Gowrie (drums), Mrs. Piss is a departure from what they do in Chelsea’s solo stuff. The project began while the two were touring around together during Wolfe’s Hiss Spun album in 2017. This music is heavier and channels some of the gnarliest, noisiest grunge-sludge sounds of the Nineties, plus plenty of the era’s riot grrrl attitude. This session was recorded in December of 2020 in Northern California and it offers a different take from the studio recordings.

Chelsea Wolfe Goes Off-Road For New Album 'Birth Of Violence'

Over the last couple years, Chelsea Wolfe has become one of my favorite vocalists. Her voice is so delicate yet hauntingly beautiful. Not to mention her songs and albums are tremendous. I also remember her from way back when she was the singer of Red Host! Now though, Chelsea has truly carved out her own niche and a force to be reckoned with. Knowing that, check out these songs she has guested on over the years.

Stream Chelsea Wolfe's New Wonder Woman-Themed Song “Diana”

A couple weeks ago I wrote about the upcoming DC Comics Dark Nights Death Metal soundtrack. The soundtrack features new songs from Mastodon, Greg Puciato, HEALTH with Chino Moreno, Idles and many more. Today though, the song with Chelsea Wolfe was released and it’s drenched in haunting beauty. The song was written by Chelsea Wolfe, Tyler Bates and Ben Chisholm. Jess Gowrie provided the drums and absolutely crushed the performance. I do hope this song makes it into Chelsea’s set for future shows. I can picture this one being pretty damn amazing live.

Great Music Videos: Chelsea Wolfe- 16 Psyche

Chelsea Wolfe's '16 Psyche' Roars Like An Asteroid : NPR

Over the past few years, I’ve really come to enjoy Chelsea Wolfe more and more. I remember seeing her open for Russian Circles way back and at the time, I wasn’t too into it. Perhaps it was because of the band before her and their energy on stage was so electric that by the time it was her set, the drop in energy just dropped. That’s not to say she and her band weren’t awesome. Anyways, a couple years back, Chelsea released the album Hiss Spun, and it all finally made sense to me. One of the songs that instantly caught my attention was “16 Psyche.” This track and video are stunningly superb. This track and album are also the perfect introduction to getting into the greatness that is Chelsea Wolfe.

Band Of The Week: Horseneck

For years now, there has been something in the water up in Sacramento, CA. The town has given us some of the best bands of the last 25 years in Deftones, Far, and Will Haven to name a few. But it doesn’t just stop there. There is another band that’s come about in the last couple years that are undoubtedly leaving their own mark on the towns musical history. I’m talking about Horseneck and these guys have ridden onto the stage with one hell of a bang. Their new album, Fever Dream, is one hell of a record and this band is seriously delivering the goods. Horseneck features former ‪Will Haven guitarists Anthony Paganelli and Lance Jackman, bassist Lennon Hudson, and current Chelsea Wolfe drummer Jess Gowrie. According to the band, the follow-up to 2017’s Heavy Trip (which is one hell of a fun album too), was a more collaborative process with all four individuals contributing more to the lyrics and music. Having spent over a year writing and refining the work, the result is a righteous slab of rockin heaviness that should be played loud. Fever Dream is a heavy rock record through and through with bits of a post-hardcore/stoner rock vibe, which gives it the variety it needs to truly be a stand out album. Horseneck is the type of band that people need to be listening to and telling everyone about! Giddy up for the ride!!!
