Cover Song: The Jim Carroll Band (The Velvet Underground)- Sweet Jane

Jim Carroll is one of the most gifted and prolific writers of the past century. His poetry has inspired countless bands and songs. His writings be it The Basketball Diaries, poetry books, or songs are nothing short of special. During his time in the 70’s, Jim spent a good amount of time with bands and musicians like The Velvet Underground, particularly Lou Reed, He once lived with Patti Smith, and was a fixture at all the local hot spots in New York like CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City. On his 1983 album I Write Your Name, he did a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane,” and it’s probably the best cover of the song I’ve ever heard. Check it out!

Cover Song: Mutoid Man w/ Mlny Parsonz of Royal Thunder- Wrecking Ball

There is a show on the internet called Two Minutes To Late Night. It’s quite funny and cool. Mutoid Man is the house band, which makes it even more awesome. Recently, the band Royal Thunder was a guest on the show and singer/bassist Mlny Parsonz (pronounced Melanie) did a rendition of Miley Cyrus’s song “Wrecking Ball.” This version is not only a million times better than Miley’s but it’s fucking awesome!

Cover Songs: Body Count does Suicidal Tendencies and Slayer

Ice T and Body Count are a very interesting band. I’ll never forget hearing them with Slayer on the Judgement Night Soundtrack. Oh the 90’s you were so damn good! Lately I’ve been slowly checking out the new stuff Body Count has put out and it’s pretty good. Their last couple albums have featured covers of Suicidal Tendencies “Institutionalized” and Slayer’s “Raining Blood” Both of which are interesting and decent. Ice T took some liberties with the lyrics to the Suicidal song but, they are pretty funny.

Cover Song: Echo and the Bunnymen (The Doors)- People Are Strange

The Lost Boys, we all remember the movie and how cool it was and still is. There is definitely something timeless about the film. Perhaps it was the era that it was released among all the other great films of the 80’s. Either way, The Lost Boys is still celebrated. The soundtrack to the movie is also one of the best of the time too. One of the songs that has always stood out to me besides “Cry Little Sister,” and “Lost in the Shadows” was Echo and the Bunnymen’s cover of “People Are Strange” by The Doors. It’s one of those covers that when you first hear, you’re a little skeptical but, in the end, you realize it’s a pretty good cover.

Cover Song: Converge (The Cure)-Disintegration

It’s been a minute since I presented you all with an intriguing cover song. There are certain things I look for in covers, for example, how the band approaches the song, do they make it their own, does it stand out in a good way or a bad way, and is the cover relevant to the band in terms of influence and inspiration.

The Cure are one of my all time favorite bands. So when any band I like covers The Cure, I am compelled to listen. A few years back the mighty Converge did a cover of Disintegration by The Cure. I recently rediscovered this gem of a cover while going on a Converge listening spree. They really take this song to another level. I won’t say anymore about it because, I want you to listen and take it all in.

Cover Song: Dead Cross (Bauhaus)- Bela Lugosi’s Dead

One of the coolest songs on the debut album from Dead Cross (the new band featuring Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo) is their cover of the Bauhaus classic “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.” Hearing their version is like hearing the song for the first time again. Mike Patton’s vocals on this song is perfect. The musical arrangement from Justin Pearson, Michael Crain and Dave Lombardo is stellar, Anyways, enough with me blabbing about it. Take a listen for yourself and do yourself a favor and buy Dead Cross’s album!

Cover Song: Disturbed (Tears For Fears)- Shout

Sometimes I wonder whose idea is it in the band to suggest a cover song. At times I wonder why the band picked “that” song to cover. So, now I’m curious to know what you all think about this cover. In 2000, on Disturbed’s debut album The Sickness, they covered Tears For Fears “Shout.” David Draiman, for all his animal noises and annoyances, has one hell of a voice. This cover is pretty solid, though nothing special, like their cover of “The Sounds Of Silence.”

Worst Cover Songs: Atreyu (Faith No More)- Epic

I really wonder why some bands think they can pull off certain covers. It’s almost as though they are surrounded by “YES” people, that tell them they can do no wrong. Here is a great example of a cover song that should have never been done and released. This is Atreyu, covering Faith No More’s “Epic.”

Cover Song: Mastodon (The Melvins)- The Bit

I’m pretty sure that Mastodon has released the album of the year. Emperor of Sand is spectacular. Needless to say, I’m totally in a Mastodon frame of mind. I was thinking of posting a cover that Mastodon did but, I realized that I had already posted it a while back. So, I found another one they did. This is their take on The Melvins song “The Bit,” which comes from their album Stag.

Cover Song: Spirit In The Room (Led Zeppelin)- Immigrant Song

Spirit In The Room is one of my favorite bands I’ve written about. Dennis Sanders is a river of inspiration and continuously keeps impressing me with what he puts out. This past week Dennis put out a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” that is quite good, and I feel compelled to share it with you all!
