Cover Comparison: Shinedown vs Deftones (Lynyrd Skynyrd)- Simple Man

Thought I’d try something different. Since there are lots of the same covers out there I thought why not see what one you the reader/listener likes best. This week I put Shinedown and Deftones versions of Lynard Skynyrd’s classic “Simple Man” against each other.

Shinedown:

Deftones:

Cover Thursday: Street Sweeper Social Club w/ Trent Reznor (MC5)- Kick Out The Jams

A few years back Tom Morello put together a new band called sTreet Sweeper Social Club. They were pretty decent. I saw them open for Nine Inch Nails twice. During one of their tour stops in San Diego Trent joined them on stage for a rendition of the MC5’s classic “Kick Out The Jams.” Check it out!

Cover Thursday: Shadows Fall (Pink Floyd)- Welcome To The Machine

Pink Floyd is very hard to cover. Korn tried and failed miserably, but then again it is Korn. In 2003, when Shadows Fall released their great album The Art Of Balance, I was incredibly surprised to hear them cover “Welcome To The Machine” at the end of the album. It’s another cover that I’m torn on. I love the original, and this version is good but I’m sure something is missing from it.

Cover Thursday: Ours (Queen)- Bohemian Rhapsody

Ourband

I’ve never been a big fan of Queen. Freddie Mercury is great, but I’be always been annoyed by Brian May. I recently stumbled across this great version of “Bohemian Rhapsody” sung by the very underrated Jimmy Gnecco of Ours. Jimmy has one of the best voices in rock music and his band Ours has always been a very underrated and fantastic band.

Cover Thursday: A.F.I. (The Cure)- Just Like Heaven

Image

When Jade Puget joined the band, he had a hand in shifting the band from the more hardcore punk they were doing and injecting a more goth vibe to the music. Over the years you can totally hear Davey Havok’s love for The Cure in his voice and lyrics. They’ve been covering “Just Like Heaven” for years, and it’s great. It’s not too far from The Cure’s version but it’s still good!

Cover Thursday: Filter (The Turtles)- Happy Together

Image

Filter has always been an underrated band. Richard Patrick has one of the best voices in rock. You can feel every word he sings/screams. Their version of The Turtles song “Happy Together” was originally done in 2009 for a movie that I’m pretty sure no one saw. Then last year when the new version of The Great Gatsby was released, and Filter’s cover found new life.
