Bands That Should Return: Deadsy

Image may contain: text

Spoiler Alert!!! DEADSY IS BACK!!! A few weeks ago, Deadsy announced their return and those of us who are fans, couldn’t be happier. Via their instagram back in mid July, the band announced not only their return but, also that they will be releasing a new album entitled Subterfugue, their first in 14 years. A new single/video is due out in late fall of this year.

Deadsy is a very interesting band. They got lumped into the whole “nu-metal” scene but they were far from that. If anything they are just electro-rock. The origins of the band date back to 1995. Elijah Blue Allman and Alec Puro started off writing songs and recordings demos and sought a record deal not long after. Then in 1996, Sire Records would make that a reality, signing the band. The band recorded their self titled debut album but, it wasn’t necessarily released. It’s a very rare release these days if you can find it. Not long after, the band began writing for their next album, Commencement. Only a few songs were written for the album at that time, as the band had planned to re-release most tracks from the self-titled album. Not long after, due to record label business, Deadsy would dropped from their label becoming free agents. While the band would be searching for a new label. the group also welcomed new members into the fold. Not long after, Jonathan Davis of Korn (a longtime friend of the band) signed Deadsy to his Elementree Records label. The band would go on to perform on the 2001 Family Values tour with Stone Temple Pilots, Linkin Park, Staind and Static-X. Their album Commencement would be released in 2002 with the first single being “The Key To Gramercy Park.” Sadly though, the album and single didn’t reach the heights that it should have and soon after, the Elementree label folded and left Deadsy looking for a new label home yet again. The band did continue to tour and work on new music. Then in 2006, their new album Phantasmagore was released via Immortal Records. Deadsy was invited to join the 2006 Family Values tour with Korn and Deftones. They would go on to be the support act for another Deftones run later that year as well. Phantasmagore saw the band delving more into an alternative/industrial vibe while still keeping their pseudo goth/electronic aesthetic going. Over the years, I personally, have really come to enjoy this album. Then in 2007, it was announced that Deadsy was going to take a break. That break would go on to last until 2018. In the years between, Elijah Blue Allman would work on a solo record, which to this date has yet to be released but, a few demo tracks are floating around online, and they are really good songs. The other members of the band would go on to form other bands or join others like Orgy and The Dreaming. Then in 2018, Deadsy would reunite to perform a semi-acoustic set alongside Queens Of The Stone Age at San Quentin Prison in California. And now, here in 2020, Deadsy are back!!!

As I mentioned, Deadsy were unfairly lumped into the wrong scene and the label issues really put a damper on what this band could have done. Their albums are pretty stellar and full of really great songs. The bands live show too was one to watch. It was quite a visceral performance to watch. Deadsy had a very interesting musical style too courtesy of Allman’s vocal style and lyrical approach, as well as the guitar playing, the energy of the drums and synth layers provided by Carlton Bost, Alec Puro, and Renn Hawkey. Having Deadsy back in this day and age is a great thing. Through the years, I’ve noticed a lot of people starting to discover the band or them coming up in conversation. So it’s nice to know that people have really taken the time to realize how good they were and are. I really look forward to what Deadsy has in store for us all.

New Release: Gojira- Another World

Today, Gojira released a new song, “Another World.” No other information was given only that this is a stand alone single. The band is still working on the follow up to 2016’s, Magma. I for one, am stoked on anything new Gojira puts out. They are one of the best bands out today. And their live shows, well those are simply amazing! Check out the video for “Another World” which was directed by Maxime Tiberghien & Sylvain Favre.

Memorable TV Performances: Bon Jovi on 1989 MTV Video Music Awards

Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi doing the first "Unplugged ...

Bon Jovi was the first band I was ever a huge fan of. Ever since I was three years old, I’ve been a fan. My first concert ever was Bon Jovi back in 1989 (I was almost 5 at the time) when they were touring for their New Jersey album. Skid Row (yes, that Skid Row) was the opening band on that tour. One day I will write a whole elaborate piece about that show. Anyways, this morning while I was getting ready, “Wanted Dead or Alive” popped in my head but it was a particular version. Back in 1989, on the MTV Video Music Awards, Jon and Richie, took the stage, just the two of them with acoustic guitars and performed “Livin’ On A Prayer” and “Wanted Dead or Alive.” That performance would go on to live in infamy. Not only for how amazing it was but, because it was the inspiration for the MTV Unplugged series. So, here we are now, over 30 years since that performance, and it’s still one of the most memorable ones I’ve ever seen.

Those 90’s Songs: Dinosaur Jr- Feel The Pain

Dinosaur Jr. - Without A Sound (1994, Vinyl) | Discogs

The 90’s are such an amazing time for music. Just like the 60’s, the 90’s helped to revolutionize music. We all know about the big bands from that era but, it’s the lesser known ones that have really left an inspirational impact. For example, the band Dinosaur Jr. The band had been around since the early mid 80’s but, it wasn’t until 1994 and their album Without A Sound, that they really started to get the acclaim they deserve. The lead single “Feel The Pain,” is truly one of the best songs of the 90’s and it really hits the mark of the time.

New Music Friday

I thought I’d try something new today. Since Friday is now “release day” for new albums and such, I thought it would be a good idea to put together all the songs and or albums that came out today and throughout the week. There is so much music being released these days, it’s hard to keep up sometimes but, with this, there’s a better chance you won’t miss something that came out. So here we go…

New Release: Greg Puciato- Roach Hiss

Greg Puciato on Going Solo, Reclaiming Aggressive Side: "The ...

Greg Puciato has premiered his new track “Roach Hiss” from his upcoming solo album Child Soldier: Creator Of God. This is the fourth single released from this record and it’s definitely showing yet another side of how versatile Greg is a vocalist and songwriter. One this track, Ben Koller, Greg’s bandmate in Killer Be Killed, as well as a member of great bands like Converge and Mutiod Man, slays the drums on this one. October 23, 2020 is the release date for the full album via Federal Prisoner Records.

New Release: Marilyn Manson- We Are Chaos

Marilyn Manson-We Are Chaos ( Official Audio ) Leaked / Unreleased ...

Marilyn Manson is back with a new album entitled We Are Chaos (out September 11). The first song released is the title track. This album was produced by Manson’s longtime friend Shooter Jennings. Based on this one song at the moment, I don’t know what to think about this one. There is definitely a Bowie influence and presence in this track. When Manson released The Pale Emperor a few years back, there seemed to be a resurgence and return to what most of us liked. This new song (granted it’s just one song at the moment) doesn’t have the same feel of urgency like The Pale Emperor did or any of the early albums. There is a bit of a Bowie vibe to this song that makes it interesting but, there is something off about it. I can’t quite place it yet. That being said though, I’m sure some of you out there will quite enjoy this.

Cover Song Collaboration: Coheed and Cambria, Mastodon, Primus, Tool, Mutoid Man (Rush)- Anthem

Two Minutes To Late Night Cover Rush

During this age of quarantine, there is a lot of free time on musicians hands.  Some are being very productive with writing new records and experimenting with new things. One of the things I’ve noticed is there is a huge flood of covers being done. A lot of them however are pretty meh and bland but, thankfully there is the people at Two Minutes To Late Night to save the day. Most recently, they conjured up a pretty impressive set of players to cover the Rush song “Anthem.” I’m not a big Rush fan but, this was too damn good not to share. Also if you haven’t seen the Rush documentary (I believe it’s still streaming on Netflix) you should check it out. It’s quite good. Anyways, this cover features Danny Carey of Tool on drums, Bill Kelliher of Mastodon on guitar, Les Claypool of Primus on bass, Stephen Brodsky of Cave In/Mutoid Man on guitar, Jordan Olds (aka Gwarsenio Hall) on guitar and Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria on vocals. What a killer job they did on this. Enjoy!

New Release: Chelsea Wolfe, Ben Chisholm & Jesse Draxler- Valerian

Visual artist Jesse Draxler has put together a pretty damn awesome array of different artists to create an audio/video project that is sure to make your head spin (not in the Linda Blair Exorcist way). The forthcoming album Reigning Cement, is based upon using solely environmental sound recordings to create some very interesting and introspective songs. This new one in particular “Valerian,” which features Chelsea Wolfe and Ben Chisholm, is super eerie and haunting. It feels more like a piece you’d find in a score to a film (maybe even a David Lynch or David Fincher film). Without a doubt though, this project is definitely one of the more innovative things I’ve heard in a long while. A few other tracks have been released as well featuring the band Vowws (another favorite of mine), and Full Of Hell. Definitely keep an eye and ear out for this when it’s fully released on September 4th via Federal Prisoner Records.

Band Of The Week: (Damn) This Desert Air

I love it when it’s been a while since you’ve heard from a band you like and they drop new music and it’s really good. That’s the case with this weeks Band Of The Week, (Damn) This Desert Air. It had been a few years since there was new music from this band. Their last album, Pyramids, still finds its way into rotation for me and it’s still a rocking record. Now, they have released a new EP called Nebulosity and it’s chock full of crunchy riffs, hard hitting rhythms and soaring melodic vocals. (Damn) This Desert Air is a band that has taken their cues from the space rock of the 90’s (Failure and Hum), added some cool post-hardcore vibes (a la Quicksand) and some melodic grunge in the way that STP did on Core and Purple. When you listen to the song “Body Anchor (Back In Atlantis),” you can definitely hear all three of those influences come into play. There is also a real maturity to this band as well that will probably get overlooked. That element has given these new songs a real sense of purpose and urgency. The passion you can hear in the performances are undeniable and it truly gives new life to this band. A song like “Lonely Train” is a great example of this. Nebulosity is a great way for (Damn) This Desert Air to come back. This EP is an encapsulation of what they’ve done in the past and are working towards. I urge anyone that reads this to really take the time to listen to this band. The pure nature of what this band is really shines. I’m quite excited to have them back and hope this is just the beginning of more to come.
