Band Of The Week: Spirit Adrift

I love a good throwback sound. Especially when it’s done in a fresh way but still retains the core of what the band is trying to convey. With heavy metal, there is a chance it can go either way but, it seems that Spirit Adrift have mastered it perfectly. Spirt Adrift have taken their love of metal from the 70’s, 80’s and even a bit of the 90’s and crafted an album that has invoked that spirit (pun totally intended), and let it run free. The bands upcoming album, Enlightened In Eternity, is chock full of great songs, melodies, riffs, solos, and so much more. There’s a fun playful vibe to this band but, at the same time you can definitely hear the serious nature of the songs. You can feel and hear the blood, sweat and soul poured into this album, just based on the three songs released so far, “Screaming From Beyond,” “Astral Levitation,” and “Harmony Of The Spheres.” Spirit Adrift have really made an album that stands out from the rest of their peers. Enlightened In Eternity is an album that will leave a lasting impact on those who listen. This band is on fire and they will have you wanting to rock out the moment you put this album on.

Songs In Film: Lou Reed- Satellite of Love in Adventureland

Adventureland - Original Cinema Movie Poster From pastposters.com British Quad Posters and US 1-Sheet Posters

The movie Adventureland is one of those movies that flew under the radar a bit when it was released but has since become a sort of Dazed and Confused type of cult movie. It’s got a really good ensemble cast, a good story, decent performances but, the real standout is the soundtrack. There are so many great songs found in this movie. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is this part when Jesse Eisenberg and Ryan Reynolds are driving and talking and Lou Reed’s “Satellite Of Love” is playing in the background. The whole scene plays out perfectly and this song plays an interesting and pivotal role for the characters. If you haven’t seen the movie, I recommend it. I’m sure it’s streaming somewhere. AND, if you’ve never listened to Lou Reed’s Transformer album, you should most definitely do that as well!

Collaborations: Metallica with Dave Mustaine

Flashback: Metallica Reunite With Dave Mustaine For Super Jam - Rolling Stone

We all know the story of how Dave Mustaine was once a member of Metallica. I don’t need to go into that. Instead let us focus on when Metallica did their 30th anniversary shows at The Fillmore in San Francisco. During those shows, Metallica played a ton of songs they haven’t in years and it featured many guests including, Ozzy, Jerry Cantrell, Danzig and especially, Dave Mustaine. The mini set they played with Mustaine was pretty awesome. It’s definitely one of those moments that should be celebrated. Who knows, maybe we’ll get to see it again one day or even one more “Big 4” show.

Musicians In TV/Film: Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson – 'We Are Chaos' review

Ever since Marilyn Manson’s new album We Are Chaos was released, I’ve been on a sort of Manson kick. His new album is really quite good (but that’s for another day and I will have a full review up about it soon). After spending some time listening back to albums, I didn’t give much of a chance, I thought it would be fun to look up other things he’s done and I remembered a few of his moments from the shows and movies he’s appeared in. So let’s take a look at those for fun.

Those 90’s Songs: Days Of The New- Touch, Peel and Stand

Touch, Peel And Stand by Days Of The New on Amazon Music - Amazon.com

Back in 1997, Days Of The New had released their self titled debut album and the lead single “Touch, Peel and Stand” was blowing up all over radio and MTV. I remember this song getting stuck in my head many times around that time, and it still pops in from time to time. And I’m sure once you hear it, it will be stuck in your head for a bit too. Days Of The New was a pretty solid band with lots of good songs. It’s too bad that things didn’t work out for them. I mean they even went on tour with Metallica and Jerry Cantrell. This song though, is so 90’s and it’s still a good song. It’s one of those that when you hear it, you can’t help but sing along to.

Soundtrack Only Songs: Scott Weiland (Depeche Mode)- But Not Tonight

But Not Tonight - YouTube

The 2001 parody movie, Not Another Teen Movie had it’s moments of hilarity but, the best part of the movie truly was the soundtrack. There are so many great cover songs on it. One of my favorites from it is Scott Weiland’s version of Depeche Mode’s “But Not Tonight.” The song is originally a B Side to the “Stripped” single by Depeche Mode. It was written during the bands Black Celebration era. Scott’s version is quite different but, it’s equally impactful. There’s a real warmth to Scott’s version too.

Great Music Videos: Korn- Freak On A Leash

Freak on a Leash (1999) – MUBI

The other day, I was talking with a friend of mine about how music videos these days just don’t have the allure and luster of the days before. Yes, we all know about the industry changing and all that but, there was something really cool about the way so many music videos had an effect not just on the song or band but, how it shaped filmmaking in general. One of th videos we were talking about was Korn’s “Freak On A Leash.” This video was directed by Todd McFarlane (of Spawn fame) and assisted by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (who would go on to make the Californication video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers). The “Freak On A Leash” video is over 20 years old now and it’s still one hell of a cool video. The way the animation and real world footage comes together is quite intriguing. The whole following the bullet aspect was pretty cool too. It’s not a surprise that the video would go on to win multiple awards.

New Release: Deftones- Genesis

Deftones Are Teasing A New Single, Genesis — Kerrang!

We are one week away from Deftones releasing their new album Ohms. Now, they have now released the first song on the album “Genesis.” This track definitely has a White Pony vibe mixed with a bit of the self titled one and some Diamond Eyes too. This album is absolutely back on the right track and way better than what Gore was.

Alternate Version: Silverchair- Emotion Sickness Live 1999

Silverchair - Live At Melbourne Park 1999 [Full Concert] - YouTube

Back in 1999, Silverchair released their opus Neon Ballroom. It was a departure from their first two (and very awesome) albums. This one though was full of so much more maturity and diversity that it has truly become one of those beloved albums the more the years have gone on. I’ll never forget hearing it for the first time, especially the first song on the album, “Emotion Sickness.” That song on its own is epic and truly remarkable. This live version of “Emotion Sickness” is astonishingly beautiful. Enjoy this. On a personal note (and I’m sure a lot of you will agree with me), Silverchair is one of those bands that really needs to get back together. That would really be something else if they did.

New Release: Eighteen Visions- Sink & The Wicked

Eighteen Visions Premiere New Song “Sink”, Announce New EP “Inferno”

Eighteen Visions are back yet again with a new EP Inferno, inspired by Italian poet Dante Alighieri‘s ‘The Divine Comedy‘. So far two songs from the EP have been released, “Sink” and “The Wicked.” Both of these tracks are badass and hit hard like 100 metal baseball bats to the head. The EP will be out on October 2nd. Looks like they really picked up where their very awesome 2017 album left off.
