Yesterday was marked 4 years since we lost Scott Weiland. It still sucks that he couldn’t get past all his demons to still create beautiful words and melodies. That being said though, we still have all the other great songs and albums he was a part of. Just like this very memorable performance from when Scott and Dean DeLeo were on Headbangers Ball and performed “Plush” acoustically. So take a few moments and enjoy this and celebrate the musical legacy Scott left us.

10 years ago, Mastodon released their epic masterpiece, Crack The Skye. That album catapulted Mastodon to all sorts of new heights. If you’ve never heard that album, you really should. It’s absolutely incredible. Anyways, during this time, Mastodon started making the rounds of playing on late night TV and their performance of “Oblivion” on the Late Show with David Letterman, was pretty damn good.

Sunny Day Real Estate are one of those bands that I’ve always had a special connection with. Ever since I first heard them, I knew that this band was something I had to listen to. I’ll never forget hearing their song “Seven” for the first time and thinking about how great this was. Their performance on the MTV show 120 Minutes is one for the books. This morning when I woke up, I had their song “In Circles” in my head and it was in the cards for me to post about that 120 Minutes performance. Their debut album Diary, is one of the best albums of the 90’s. That album has influenced and inspired countless bands and artists over the years. If you’ve never listened to that album, you should really do that!

Back in 1998, Deftones were riding high on their second album Around The Fur (my all time favorite Deftones album). By the time their second single “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” dropped, Deftones were fast on their way to begin taking over. On April 20, 1998, they performed “Be Quiet and Drive” on Late Night with Conan O’Brien before heading out on the Vans Warped Tour (back when they still had great lineups). Back in 2000, while riding high on their acclaimed album Relationship Of Command, At The Drive In was the musical guest on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. This performance of their seminal classic “One Armed Scissor” was fantastic. I remember watching it that evening and thinking that this band was really something awesome. Back then, At The Drive In were one of the best live bands in the world. They had the complete package, the songs, the live show and the energy. This is still one of the coolest performances on late night TV to this day, in my opinion.

Back in the yesteryear when MTV actually played music, they had some pretty amazing shows that were televised. On Halloween in 1997, Jane’s Addiction played a show at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. This Jane’s reunion would feature Flea on bass instead of Eric Avery. Jane’s Addiction would release the Kettle Whistle record which featured new songs “Kettle Whistle” and “So What” both featured Flea on bass, as well as alternate, unreleased and live tracks. The show for MTV was quite the performance and the set list was top notch. Enjoy this classic gem!

Back in 1988, The Cult performed on the late Joan Rivers late night talk show. They performed the song “Lil Devil” from their badass album Electric, along with “Born To Be Wild.” The band joins Joan on the couch for an interview and Ian’s father calls in to wish Ian a happy birthday. I still think The Cult are one of the most underappreciated rock bands ever. They continue to put out quality rock albums like Born Into This, Choice Of Weapon and Hidden City. I highly suggest you taking a listen to those and adding them to your collection.

Way back in 2009, on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, there was a very awesome one off reunion on his show. The band Jawbox had reunited for a quick performance to promote a reissue of their major label debut, For Your Own Special Sweetheart. During this spot, the band played the standout track “Savory.” It’s worth noting too that (if you don’t know), Deftones and Far’s Jonah Matranga did a great cover of this song. Following this one off, there were no other shows announced or anything. I bring all this up now because, after 20 years, Jawbox has announced their first full tour in so many years.

Back in 2004 when Slipknot released their album Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses, they were guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Rather than play outside on the big stage, Slipknot opted to play inside on the tiny stage instead. I was one of the lucky few that got to go to this mini concert and it was intense. Slipknot ripped through “Duality” and “The Blister Exists” this evening and the crowd ate it up. I remember the people that worked on the show being rather scared of what might happen with Slipknot playing inside and all the fans going nuts, especially when they began playing “The Blister Exists.” This was one of those TV performances that will always be memorable to me for obvious reasons but also because getting to see Slipknot on a small stage again was badass
Back in 2007 while riding high on the release of their very kick ass album The Big Dirty, Every Time I Die performed the song “We’rewolf” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. This was a very intense performance for a couple reasons, 1, they performed on the inside stage which is rather tiny but right up the ally of the guys in the band. 2, the audience that was watching them probably had no idea what they were in for and 3, this was the first time ETID had performed on a late night TV show.
