Cover Song: Stephen Brodsky & Marissa Nadler- (Guns N Roses)- Estranged

Cave In and Mutoid Man’s Stephen Brodsky is quite the busy guy. In addition to the two bands I just mentioned, he’s got a project with vocalist Marissa Nadler. Their collaborative album entitled Droneflower will be released April 26th via Sacred Bones Records. They have released a couple songs from the album. The first was an original song called “For The Sun,” which is quite a haunting introduction to the band. The second though is a cover of Guns N Roses’ “Estranged.” This is one of the best cover songs I’ve ever heard. “Estranged” happens to be my favorite GnR song of all time, so I was a tad skeptical before listening but, within seconds, I knew that this was amazing. Everything about this cover is perfect. It’s a totally different take on the GnR classic and it’s just beautiful.

Cover Song: Meg Myers (Kate Bush)- Running Up That Hill

I’ve written about her a few times and really enjoy what she brings to the music world of today. Recently, Meg released a cover of the Kate Bush classic “Running Up That Hill.” Her version is unique to her and does what you should do with a cover, make it your own. This isn’t the first cover of this song that I’ve come to enjoy. Placebo did a cover of this song many years ago that has always been stuck out to me and many others as well. On this version, Meg  gives it a bit more energy and an optimistic vibe. Enjoy!

Cover Song: Rammstein (Depeche Mode)- Stripped

Ever since I made my Ultimate Set List for Depeche Mode, I’ve been in that frame of mind. Which got me thinking about all the Depeche Mode covers out there. One of the ones I remembered being interesting and not bad was Rammstein’s cover of “Stripped.” There is some interesting history about this cover as well. Released as a single in 1998, this cover also appears on their album Sehnsucht, the one that has “Du Hast.” It was also the bands first song sung entirely in English. Their version cuts the line “Let me see you stripped down to the bone” to “Let me see you stripped”, which was due to singer Till Lindermann’s difficulty singing the “down to the bone” line. Though that part was restored in a remix done by former Nine Inch Nails member Charlie Clouser. Rammstein are supposed to release a new album in 2019 and tour it so, hopefully when they do, they decide to do this live.

Cover Song: Ryan Adams (Oasis)- Wonderwall

Ryan Adams is one hell of a talented guy. His ability to constantly put out great songs is astounding. Over the years he has done quite a few cool cover songs. For example he did a version of the Black Flag classic “Nervous Breakdown” that is really quite rad. Anyways, a few years back, Ryan did a cover of the Oasis classic “Wonderwall” and it’s one of those versions that really stands out and made it his own. Even Noel Gallagher has come out and said Ryan is the only one to cover it and “get it.” Enjoy this great version of a truly classic song.

Cover Song: 10 Years (Nirvana)- Heart Shaped Box

On the bonus track edition of the new 10 Years album, (How To Live) As Ghosts, they did a cover of Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box.” It’s quite a cool cover with a very moody approach. It’s one of those covers that when you hear it, you’ll enjoy it. They did the song justice and put their own spin on it. The vibe of this song would be great in a movie trailer.

Cover Song: Cave In (Nirvana)- Breed

While I was digging around the other day through Cave In live shows and assorted songs, I came across a cover that I totally forgot about. A few years back there was a tribute album dedicated to Nirvana’s Nevermind entitled, Whatever Nevermind. On it bands like Cave In, Young Widows, Touche Amore, Torche, and many others took on the songs from Nevermind. Cave In did “Breed” and knocked it out of the park. Everything about their version is top notch, especially Caleb’s bass tone. Holy crap is it good!

Cover Song: Depeche Mode (David Bowie)- Heroes

Yes, I am on a huge Depeche Mode kick right now. There is something so genuine and pure about a Depeche Mode album. Martin Gore’s songs along with Andy Fletcher’s soundscapes and Dave Gahan’s incredible vocals, make Depeche Mode a band that is timeless and exhilarating to listen to. One of my favorite stories about Depeche Mode is how they found Dave Gahan. The story goes, Vince Clarke (former member/founder of Yazoo and Erasure) was out one evening and saw Dave Gahan on stage doing a rendition of David Bowie’s “Heroes.” After that, Dave was in the band and Depeche Mode was born. So it’s only fitting that I share a cover of “Heroes” for you all to enjoy.

Cover Song: Jane’s Addiction (Led Zeppelin)- Whole Lotta Love

This past week I’ve been on a Jane’s Addiction kick. While further delving into their early career, before Nothing’s Shocking, I came across a very interesting cover they did of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” They really made the song their own in a way that only Jane’s Addiction could. Dave Navarro’s playing and little additional leads to the song are outstanding. Stephen Perkins nails the Bonham feel but adds a bit of a funkier vibe to it, Eric Avery is so damn steady and loose that it just comes natural for him and of course the vocals from Perry Farrell are so uniquely his. This is just a really well done and fun cover. Enjoy!

Cover Song: Billy Idol (The Doors)- L.A. Woman

Back in 1990, Billy Idol released his fourth solo studio album entitled Charmed Life. The album featured the hit single “Cradle Of Love.” That song went on to win multiple awards for it’s video which was directed by David Fincher. There was another song on the album though, that got a lot of attention, and that was Billy’s cover of The Doors classic, L.A. Woman. His version was shorter than the original and it also had a bit of a different vibe but, it was still one of those covers that stood out for being unique and still honoring the original. The video for the cover was also directed by David Fincher. L.A. Woman is one of my all time favorite songs by The Doors, and ever since I heard Billy Idol’s version when I was a very young kid (think I was 6), I’ve loved it even more. By the way, Billy Idol is still a badass and continues to rock the stage and release great rock music.
