There is a rumor going around that the former singer of the band Dry Cell and X Factor contestant Jeff Gutt is going to be fronting Stone Temple Pilots. Which, if this is true, is going to be a really bad decision. To further cement why I think this would be a horrible choice, here is Jeff’s old band Dry Cell covering STP’s “Heaven and Hot Rods.”

I’m not sure why this keeps happening. There seems to be a new thing going on in music where bands are releasing cover albums and E.P.’s. Granted things like this have been happening for a very long time, it just seems that over the past few years it’s become more prevalent. Recently, I came across a cover of Whitesnake’s “Still Of The Night” by Halestorm. I couldn’t believe what I heard. First off, when I was a kid, I was a big Whitesnake fan, as was my mom, and “Still Of The Night” was one of my jams. So, when I heard this atrocious cover, I felt compelled to have to share it with you all. This cover just doesn’t have the same “gusto” as David Coverdale singing it.

I’m pretty sure that Mastodon has released the album of the year. Emperor of Sand is spectacular. Needless to say, I’m totally in a Mastodon frame of mind. I was thinking of posting a cover that Mastodon did but, I realized that I had already posted it a while back. So, I found another one they did. This is their take on The Melvins song “The Bit,” which comes from their album Stag.

Spirit In The Room is one of my favorite bands I’ve written about. Dennis Sanders is a river of inspiration and continuously keeps impressing me with what he puts out. This past week Dennis put out a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” that is quite good, and I feel compelled to share it with you all!

Last night the song “Sonic Reducer” by the Dead Boys popped in my head for some reason. And since I really enjoy sharing cover songs with you all, I thought I’d share Pearl Jam’s version of this seminal punk rock classic. Pearl Jam does one hell of a job with their take on “Sonic Reducer.” Eddie Vedder’s voice was made for this song.

I absolutely love finding bad cover songs and sharing them with you all. This one isn’t necessarily horrible but, it leaves a lot to be desired. Ministry is a hard band to cover and if you don’t do it right or justice, it’s going to end up a disappointment. Here is Limp Bizkit covering “Thieves” by Ministry.

I’ve got a really fun cover comparison for you all. Pantera and Machine Head have both covered Black Sabbath’s “Hole In The Sky.” I’m curious to know what version you all think is the best. Take a listen, and let me know what you think!

There is a new “collective group” (I’ve stopped using the term Supergroup) out called Gone Is Gone. It’s made up of Troy Sanders of Mastodon, Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens of the Stone Age, Tony Hajjar of At The Drive In and Mike Zarin. On paper this sounds like it could sound really cool, but it just doesn’t do it sadly. So much talent, but the execution is lackluster. Speaking of lackluster, on their full length debut album Echolocation, Gone Is Gone did a cover of Portishead’s “Roads.” Their version really misses the mark and is quite possibly one of the worst covers I’ve ever heard. Hear it for yourself.

Here is a fun cover song of Judas Priest’s “Painkiller,” by Darkest Hour. While the vocals don’t reach the highs of the legendary Rob Halford, Darkest Hour’s version adds a bit of heaviness and grit to the song in terms of the musical arrangement and tones.
