Those 80’s Songs: Cinderella- Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)

Cinderella: Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone) / Fire And Ice 7" 45  VG++ - Amazon.com Music

Yesterday, the music world lost Jeff LaBar, guitarist for the band Cinderella. Cinderella is one of those bands from the 80’s that got lumped in with the whole “hair metal” sub-genre but, when you strip away all the glam aspects, deep down, they were a really great blues rock band. Arguably, singer Tom Keifer has one of the best rock voices. After hearing about the passing of Jeff, for some reason the Cinderella song “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)” popped in my head. The song is featured on the band’s second album, 1988’s Long Cold Winter. The song was the bands highest charting song. It’s more than a “power ballad” it’s just a really great and well written song.

Deep Cuts: Metallica- Dyers Eve

Metallica - ...And Justice for All Lyrics and Tracklist | Genius

The first Metallica album I ever heard was And Justice For All and from that point I was hooked. I was only 4 at the time but, it all made so much sense to me. Throughout the years of me listening to the album, I’ve come to love certain songs a ton. One of which is “Dyers Eve.” The songs lyrics is a rant from Hetfield to his parents and it’s such a poignant rant too. Musically, this song rips. It’s a “thrashterpiece” of epic proportions. Interestingly too, this song was debuted live in 2004, sixteen years after it was recorded, at a show in Los Angeles during the bands 2004 Madly In Anger With The World Tour. Also, as an album closer, what a way to end it on.

Cover Song: The Smashing Pumpkins (David Essex)- Rock On

Rock On (David Essex) (live) - The Smashing Pumpkins - YouTube

The Smashing Pumpkins have a very interesting and awesome history with cover songs. Through all my years of listening to them, I’ve noticed that when they do a cover, it’s usually done in a manner that is tasteful, creative and a little different. I’m quite fond of their cover of Depeche Mode’s “Never Let Me Down.” So much so that it’s in my top 10 favorite covers. One of the cover songs that SP has done over the years that always was a fun one to delve into was their take on the David Essex classic “Rock On.” The Smashing Pumpkins version is a bit more experimental and artsy but, still retains the impact of the original with a new spin. If you haven’t heard this before, I’m interested to get your take on it.

New Release: Twelve Foot Ninja- Start The Fire

Australia must have something in the water to being about so many awesome bands. Rose Tattoo, Silverchair, Memento, Karnivool, and to a lesser extent Wolfmother come to mind when I think of bands from down under. There’s another band from the area that should be on your radar, Twelve Foot Ninja. These guys are pretty damn awesome. They are metal with bits of alternative, prog and a bit of an artsy vibe thrown in. The live videos I’ve seen are super high energy. I’d love for them to do a proper headline tour of the states at some point. Anyways, today, they released the first single “Start The Fire” from their upcoming album, Vengeance (out Oct 15). With this new album, it will be accompanied by a multi-media project that will also feature a ‘high fantasy’ novel by the name of “The Wyvern And The Wolf” (written by Nicholas Snelling) and a graphic novel titled “Vengeance“.

The other day I mentioned to a really good friend that Thrice was going back out on tour and we both got very excited. Thrice is also, based on their social media posts, have been hard at work on a new album. Hopefully they share a new song or two on tour. Throughout their career, Thrice has been one of the few bands to try to make their set lists different and fun for the audience. The past few tours, they’ve set up an online portal for fans to vote on what songs they want to hear. The end result is always interesting since, so many people have yet to see them live so the most popular choices are always front and center. For me, I’d rather have some deeper cuts so, that’s why doing these Ultimate Set Lists are so much fun.

F You Songs: Slipknot- People = Shit

Iowa — Slipknot | Last.fm

Perhaps the events in the world the last well, many years has made me more cynical but, anytime I see things in the news about ignorance, hatred, corruption or anything that fits that mold, I always find myself singing the chorus of Slipknot’s “People = Shit” to myself. It’s just a very fitting song when people start acting like utter morons. Also, it’s a great song when you just want to say F You to someone you just can’t stand or feel disgust towards. So, with that in mind, here’s another great F You song to add to the list!

New Release: Eighteen Visions- 1996

Eighteen Visions : MerchNow - Your Favorite Band Merch, Music and More

Eighteen Visions are back!!! Today, they have premiered a new single of theirs by the name of “1996“. This one is chock full of the heavy you know and love about the band. Speaking on the song singer James Hart said “It was 1996. At the time, Huntington Beach had no shortage of white supremacists and we were always finding ourselves in a tangle with them. I was serving detention on a Saturday during the first couple of weeks of my senior year in high school. As I entered the detention room I took a shove from one of the nazis we had a beef with that carried over from the previous school year. The hours couldn’t pass soon enough and as the bell rang I was able to catch him outside where I took him to the ground. Once again, I had gotten the better of him and exposed him and his hateful ideas to those that witnessed the events. FUCK ALL THAT YOU BELIEVE & FUCK RACISM.” And then you listen to the song and it all comes together! If this is the direction of their new material, then it’s going to be one hell of a new album or EP they put out!

Secret Songs: Anthrax- Pieces

Anthrax – Pieces Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

2021 marks 40 years since Anthrax formed. Over the past month or so, they have been putting up mini docs about each period of their career. Its quite fascinating to hear these stories and how everything came together. On a more recent episode which focused on the underrated album, Volume 8: The Threat Is Real, there was a part where Frank Bello was talking about the song he wrote “Pieces” for his brother Anthony, who was murdered. This song is so damn heartfelt and good. It’s a wonderful tribute and also shows how good Frank is at singing and writing.
