You Might Have Missed: Nothing More

There are some bands out there that get lumped into a genre and are seen just as “one of those” bands. When that happens people miss out on something that can be really good. Hailing from San Antonio, Nothing More is a band that has broken through the mainstream with their single “This Is The Time (Ballast).” Their self titled album which was released in June 2014 is one of the more underrated albums to come out last year. Sure the production is more on the “produced” side but the songs are what you should be paying attention to. The band has been around since the early 2000’s and have waited for this moment. Nothing More emits raw aggression with its vocals and riffs, thunderous bass and at times tribal percussion not to mention an energy level that rivals most headlining acts. Nothing More’s mission for their music is to create honest, passionate art with real intent, and they have done just that.

Since Jimmy Page is overseeing the new remasters of all their albums, I thought now is a good time to rank all the Zeppelin albums. So here it is in order of not the best to the best. This list is also just my opinion.

Band Of The Week: Haster

Haster of Orange County, California was formed in late 2010. With influences such as Chevelle, Deftones, Tool, and Korn, their sound plays off those influences into a solid alternative metal foundation. I’d even compare them to a newer band like Nothing More.  Their main goal is to incorporate  ambient feel, heavy foundation, and a performance intent on telling a story, evoking a rich experience that creates an insatiable desire for more.  In addition to releasing their full length album Let It Go in 2014, Haster has amassed some acclaim with Best Metal Band Nominee at the Orange County Music Awards in 2014, Best Metal Band of Artists In Music Awards in 2013 and Artist of the Year & Best Metal Band Nominee at the Artists In Music Awards in 2012.

Cover Thursday: Queens Of The Stone Age (Billy Idol)- White Wedding

When Queens Of The Stone Age released their very great album Era Vulgaris, they also recorded a cover of the Billy Idol classic “White Wedding.” In true Queens fashion they added a bit of a stripped down flair to it. It’s definitely an interesting take on Billy’s version (which is the better version).

Album Review: Anakin- Celestial Frequency Shifter

10460864_863401567015831_1510592037729759178_o

Putting aside genre defining, Anakin simply rocks. Their blend of space rock and hooky melodies carry the weight throughout their new album Celestial Frequency Shifter. There is so much space and ambience entangled with the subtle crunchy guitars. Their influences of Weezer, Failure, Hum and science fiction really shine on this release without overpowering the sound that the band has created. Anakin really took their time to craft songs that can stand out on their own or as an album (as it should be). “Astro(not)” is the perfect beginning to this album. The third song “Lucidity,”  really picks up the pace as as hard charging song complete with sultry hooks.  Songs like “Clairvoyanace,” “Ctrl.Alt.Del” and the closing song “Sunbeam,” really strike with the hooks and distorted guitars. There is also another element that this album has, and that is its ability to be uplifting. The way the vocal melodies are mixed with the synths, create this harmonious meditation while listening. Anakin have made an album that is perfect for the start of a new year. Their notions of hope and the thought of what is out there really comes into play.

You Might Have Missed: Iommi

Finally in 2000 after nearly 5 years in the making, Tony Iommi released the be all end all of solo albums featuring guest vocalists. All of the songs on the album were written by Tony Iommi, producer Bob Marlette and each of the vocalists that appear on the songs. The album features Phil Anselmo, Dave Grohl, Henry Rollins, Billy Corgan, Serj Tankian, Billy Idol, Ian Astbury, Peter Steele, Skin, and Ozzy. According to Tony Iommi, he and Phil Anselmo had recorded three tracks together for the album, but only one was put onto the album. Phil had later on said that there was a chance that they might have done a full album had time permitted amongst other things. The album peaked at number 129 on the Billboard charts and its only single released, “Goodbye Lament” featuring Dave Grohl reached number 10 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. This album is quite a remarkable album, as it shows what Tony Iommi’s playing sounds like with different types of singers. Slash tried to do something similar with his first “solo” album, but to me he failed miserably mainly because he is overrated and picked the wrong people to have on his album. Tony Iommi is a true legend and master of his craft, and this album is a testament to his legacy
