SOUNDTRACK ONLY SONGS: JERRY CANTRELL- IN MOONLIGHT

I haven’t seen a lot of movies out in theaters these days. One I did venture out to see that I was really intrigued by was the new film, Sinners. From the previews and what I heard it seemed like a fun movie and oh boy was it. I haven’t had that much fun watching a new movie in quite some time. If you are looking for a really fun movie, I recommend Sinners. One of the things that I did notice while watching the film was a song that stood out quite interestingly well and it turns out it was Jerry Cantrell. The song he wrote for the film “In Moonlight” has this really awesome blues drawl to it mixed with Jerry’s signature sound. It was one of those songs that really struck the mood in the film! Also, Lars Ulrich played drums on it! So we are getting ever closer to that Metallica and Alice In Chains collab or tour. I can feel it coming in the next couple of years! I mean how awesome would it be to see Metallica tour with Alice In Chains?!?!?!?! Anyways, enjoy this song. I know I sure do!

Last night, I was scrolling through the channels to find something to watch and I noticed that the movie Orange County with Jack Black and Colin Hanks was just about to start. It had been a minute since I’ve seen it and I thought, why not watch this. The moment it started, I remembered the song “Defy You” by The Offspring is in the movie. I’ve always dug that song. It’s just a cool rock jam. The song was long rumored to be a part of the band’s album Splinter but, it was left off. Instead the only other way to obtain “Defy You” was via the Orange County soundtrack or The Offspring’s Greatest Hits album.

Oh the 90’s, what a great time for music. Just like our parents had the 60’s and 70’s, we had the 90’s. The music and films at the time were totally representative of the changing culture. There were a few filmmakers like Richard Linklater and Kevin Smith that really dialed in on that. One such film which has now garnered a cult following, is Kevin Smith’s Mallrats. Not only was the movie funny and zeroed in on the culture, the soundtrack that accompanied it was pretty damn good. There was one song on it that I will always remember and that was Bush’s “Bubbles.” This song was released only on the soundtrack for Mallrats, though it now can be found on an expanded edition of the bands second album Razorblade Suitcase (which is quite a great album as well). Soundtrack Only Songs: The Smashing Pumpkins- Drown

The year is 1992 and the Seattle music scene is exploding. Director Cameron Crowe has made a film that tries to encapsulate that era of Seattle with his film Singles. While the film is a bit hit and miss, there is one thing about the film that stands out, it’s soundtrack.

We all know about the inclusion of Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Mudhoney and Chris Cornell. There is one song in particular on the soundtrack that has always stood out to me. That song is “Drown” by The Smashing Pumpkins. The song debuted during the tour for their debut album and was written not long after that record was released. “Drown” became a moderate radio hit in mid-1992 and gave the band significant exposure just before work commenced on their follow up album Siamese Dream. It’s worth noting that the song was also released on the band’s official greatest hits compilation album Rotten Apples but, only the abridged version was included. “Drown” was considered for the Pisces Iscariot album but William Patrick Corgan decided to not include it. The other night, when I saw the Pumpkins live, I finally got to hear this masterful song in its entirety and it left me in awe.

There is no need for a lengthy post. The music does all the talking needed. It’s still a shame that they had to make a sequel to The Crow, and that they are trying to remake it. The only good thing about the second crow movie was the soundtrack, which we’ve already talked about. On that soundtrack though, Filter released a “soundtrack only song” in “Jurassitol.” Enjoy some classic Filter!
