Cover Song: Jane’s Addiction (Led Zeppelin)- Whole Lotta Love

This past week I’ve been on a Jane’s Addiction kick. While further delving into their early career, before Nothing’s Shocking, I came across a very interesting cover they did of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” They really made the song their own in a way that only Jane’s Addiction could. Dave Navarro’s playing and little additional leads to the song are outstanding. Stephen Perkins nails the Bonham feel but adds a bit of a funkier vibe to it, Eric Avery is so damn steady and loose that it just comes natural for him and of course the vocals from Perry Farrell are so uniquely his. This is just a really well done and fun cover. Enjoy!

Cover Song: Billy Idol (The Doors)- L.A. Woman

Back in 1990, Billy Idol released his fourth solo studio album entitled Charmed Life. The album featured the hit single “Cradle Of Love.” That song went on to win multiple awards for it’s video which was directed by David Fincher. There was another song on the album though, that got a lot of attention, and that was Billy’s cover of The Doors classic, L.A. Woman. His version was shorter than the original and it also had a bit of a different vibe but, it was still one of those covers that stood out for being unique and still honoring the original. The video for the cover was also directed by David Fincher. L.A. Woman is one of my all time favorite songs by The Doors, and ever since I heard Billy Idol’s version when I was a very young kid (think I was 6), I’ve loved it even more. By the way, Billy Idol is still a badass and continues to rock the stage and release great rock music.

Cover Song: Cave In (The Cure)- Plainsong

I love Cave In. Every album this band has put out is tremendous. They have never been one to stay complacent with the music they write or the direction the want to go. Back in the year 2000, Cave In was asked to contribute to a tribute album to The Cure. They chose to cover “Plainsong” from the album Disintegration. The Cave In version turned out really cool and spaced out. Check it out!!!

A few years back, Kerrang magazine put out a Metallica tribute compilation. On that comp a ton of bands like Machine Head, Mastodon, Chimaira, Trivium and a few others. The Mastodon cover of “Orion” is top notch. Machine Head’s version of “Battery” is pretty damn solid.

Check it out!

I love when bands just do covers for fun. Recently, Spirit In The Room (one of the best bands around today), did a fun cover of The Q. Lazzarus song “Goodbye Horses.” You might remember the song from The Silence Of The Lambs. This cover is quite good and fun. You can hear it in their version that they are just having a good time.

I remember back in 1996 when Marilyn Manson released his version of the Eurythmics song “Sweet Dreams” that it would be really cool if one day he did a version of Gerard McMann’s “Cry Little Sister” from The Lost Boys. Well now over 20 years later, my wish has been granted. Marilyn Manson finally did a cover of the song and it’s just what I expected it to be.

Check it out!!

So as you can tell I’m still really digging on The Atlas Moth. Since I saw them live a couple weeks back, I’ve been searching for all things related to the band. I recently stumbled upon this cover they did of Pink Floyd’s “Fearless” and I have to say it’s pretty damn good. Check it out and enjoy what The Atlas Moth brings to this Pink Floyd gem.

Ever since I heard the album Seismic by Spotlights, I just can’t get enough of them. They are one of the bright spots in today’s music scene. They have an EP called Hanging By Faith which is out in a couple weeks (June 15 to be exact) which features a really great cover of The Cure’s song “Faith.” Spotlights really knocked it out of the park with their version. It harks back to that era of The Cure but also shows the dynamic range of what Spotlights are more than capable of.

I’m still hoping that one day White Zombie will get back together for at least one show. But at least there is still the music. One of my favorite Kiss songs “God Of Thunder was covered by White Zombie way back when. It’s definitely an interesting cover. Enjoy it!

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Korn’s album Follow The Leader. They just announced 3 shows to celebrate the album. This morning I felt the urge to go back and listen to the album and I totally forgot about the hidden track at the end of the album of the cover they did of Cheech and Chong’s “Earache My Ear” with Cheech on vocals.
