Anticipated Albums: Wear Your Wounds- Rust On The Gates Of Heaven

I love side projects. Especially when they deviate from the style of music you’ve associated someone with for so long. Wear Your Wounds is one of my favorite side projects I’ve ever heard. Wear Your Wounds was created by Converge founder Jacob Bannon. Initially conceived as a solo project, it evolved into a five-piece band that often works with collaborating musicians. In 2017, the debut self titled double album was released followed closely by the even more experimental Dunedevil, which was also an accompaniment to Bannon’s abstract art book of the same name. Now, Wear Your Wounds, prepare to release their new album Rust on the Gates of Heaven (out July 12 via Deathwish Inc.).  The release marks the first time the official lineup of the band; Jacob Bannon (Converge), Mike McKenzie (The Red Chord, Stomach Earth, Unraveller, etc), Adam McGrath (Cave In, Nomad Stones, etc), Sean Martin (Twitching Tongues, ex-Hatebreed, ex-Kid Cudi), and Chris Maggio (ex-Trap Them, ex-Sleigh Bells, etc) have properly written and recorded together. It also features musicians Ben Chisholm (Chelsea Wolfe, White Horse) and Gared O’Donnell (Planes Mistaken For Stars, Hawks and Doves) collaborating throughout. Watch and or listen to the music video for the album’s eponymous first single now. Personally I can’t wait for this album to come out. So do yourself a favor and dive in to this great band and their work.

Anticipated Albums: Cave In- Final Transmission

On June 7th of this year (2019), Cave In will release a new and final album appropriately titled, Final Transmission. This album features the last recordings of the late Caleb Scofield. The first song released, “All Illusion,” is a Caleb composition that Steve had originally written lyrics for. But that changed not long after Caleb’s passing, when Adam went to visit Caleb’s wife, Jen, and their two kids, Desmond and Sydney. “Jen found some lyrics in one of Caleb’s journals,” Adam explains. “She was going to tear them out and give them to me, but I just took a picture because I wanted her to keep it. We used the lyrics for “All Illusion,” which is a song that really haunts me. I feel like it’s a weird message from Caleb sometimes.” And what a song it is. This for me is one of the, if not most anticipated albums of 2019. You can pre-order the album HERE.

Cover Song: Cave In (Nirvana)- Breed

While I was digging around the other day through Cave In live shows and assorted songs, I came across a cover that I totally forgot about. A few years back there was a tribute album dedicated to Nirvana’s Nevermind entitled, Whatever Nevermind. On it bands like Cave In, Young Widows, Touche Amore, Torche, and many others took on the songs from Nevermind. Cave In did “Breed” and knocked it out of the park. Everything about their version is top notch, especially Caleb’s bass tone. Holy crap is it good!

Live Show Recap: Caleb Scofield Memorial Show

This is not a review, rather this is a recap of this magical show. Back in March of this year, Cave In bassist Caleb Scofield was tragically killed in a car accident. Since his passing, his peers have come together to raise funds for his family as well as celebrate Caleb’s legacy. This past evening at The Wiltern, the second tribute show to celebrate Caleb happened and it was something special.

Cover Song: Cave In (The Cure)- Plainsong

I love Cave In. Every album this band has put out is tremendous. They have never been one to stay complacent with the music they write or the direction the want to go. Back in the year 2000, Cave In was asked to contribute to a tribute album to The Cure. They chose to cover “Plainsong” from the album Disintegration. The Cave In version turned out really cool and spaced out. Check it out!!!

Underrated and Influential Part 1: CAVE IN

For years now Cave In has been one of my favorite bands not only for my listening pleasure, but as something that has inspired me in the direction I’ve wanted to go in musically.While I’ve only seen them live once, it still stands out in my mind as a one of the great shows I’ve been to in my life. This is the first installment of many featuring bands that have become very influential and are considered by many to be underrated.

Cave In was formed in 1995, in Massachusetts. The have released 5 full length albums and multiple EP’s and splits. Their 1998 release Until Your Heart Stops is now considered one of the top metal/hardcore albums of all time. Soon after this release, the band started experimenting with other genres and released the critically acclaimed album Jupiter. Jupiter featured many introspective soundscapes and offered a different approach to the bands sound into the more psychedelic and space rock genres. In 2003 Cave in moved from the independent label Hydra Head to RCA Records for the release of Antenna. Antenna was more of a departure from their now experimental heaviness and into the realm of a more mainstream sound. Despite tours with Foo Fighters and Muse, RCA didn’t put much into the band and they were soon left without a label. Taking what they had gone through with being on a major label and all the turmoil that is caused, the band regrouped to release Perfect Pitch Black, an album filled with raw emotion, anger and despair but a real sense of who they truly are as a band and not a major label puppet act. The group went on a break in 2006. During the break the members of Cave In formed other projects such as Zozobra, Clouds, and Old Man Gloom. 2009 saw the band get back together and release a new EP, Planets of Old. Their subsequent tour would be some of the most energetic live shows the’ve played in years. In 2011, White Silence was released  Both of these post-breakup releases saw a return to Cave In’s earlier and heavier sound.

The members of Cave In, Stephen Brodsky (vocals/guitar), Adam McGrath (guitar), Caleb Scofield (bass/vocals) and John-Robert Conners (drums) have crafted a signature sound together that many bands nowadays try to replicate and make their own. They have released 2 of the best albums in the last 20 years (Until Your Hear Stops and Jupiter) with each of them becoming quintessential albums to be in record collections and for bands to become influenced by. One can only hope they continue and keep inspiring more musicians out there.
