I heard this the other day on satellite radio. I can’t tell if I like it or not.

I’ve never been a big fan of Queen. Freddie Mercury is great, but I’be always been annoyed by Brian May. I recently stumbled across this great version of “Bohemian Rhapsody” sung by the very underrated Jimmy Gnecco of Ours. Jimmy has one of the best voices in rock music and his band Ours has always been a very underrated and fantastic band.

In 1990, Helmet came on to the scene with their debut album Strap It On. It was hailed by critics at the time as innovative for its explosive, propulsive, riff style. The song “Sinatra” was talked about as moody and atmospheric. With a description like that it’s no wonder that the Deftones would go on to cover this song.

Neil Young has always been one of my all time favorites. His influence on countless bands is astounding. Back in 1993 at the MTV awards of all places Neil joined Pearl Jam for a very outstanding rendition of Rockin In The Free World!. Happy Fourth Of July!

When Jade Puget joined the band, he had a hand in shifting the band from the more hardcore punk they were doing and injecting a more goth vibe to the music. Over the years you can totally hear Davey Havok’s love for The Cure in his voice and lyrics. They’ve been covering “Just Like Heaven” for years, and it’s great. It’s not too far from The Cure’s version but it’s still good!

I am not a Steely Dan fan at all. In fact to quote Seth Rogen in Knocked Up “Steely Dan gargles my balls.” Strangely though, their song “Dirty Work” seems to pop in my head from time to time. I remember an episode of The Sopranos when Tony Soprano (RIP James Gandolfini) was singing it while driving. Thankfully there is a version of this song that I can listen to and thoroughly enjoy. It’s by a super group of sorts. In 1995 Ken Andrews and Greg Edwards of Failure joined forces with Paul D’Amour (formerly of Tool) and Chris Pitman (now in the new Guns N Roses) and recorded and album of covers under the name Replicants. Enjoy the only way Steely Dan can truly be tolerated!
Zeppelin is an institution and very hard to cover right. There have been a few instances where it’s a success. This version of Kashmir with Alice In Chains and the addition of the symphony is spectacular. William Duvall delivers! He adds a bit of soul and gruff to the song. Jerry, Mike and Sean are right in the pocket. Take a listen for yourself.
Filter has always been an underrated band. Richard Patrick has one of the best voices in rock. You can feel every word he sings/screams. Their version of The Turtles song “Happy Together” was originally done in 2009 for a movie that I’m pretty sure no one saw. Then last year when the new version of The Great Gatsby was released, and Filter’s cover found new life.

One of the coolest things Pantera ever did was cover this Black Sabbath song.
Here’s Phil discussing the cover!
When I first heard Pearl Jam’s version of this song I got severe goosebumps. Eddie takes it to another level on this version. This is one of those instances when another band completely owns the songs and makes it theirs.
