Cover Thursday: Coal Chamber (Peter Gabriel)- Shock The Monkey

Since Coal Chamber released their first album in over 13 years this week, I find it only fitting that this weeks cover song comes from them. In 1999 when the band released their second album Chamber Music, “Shock The Monkey” was released as a single and helped propel the band more into the mainstream.

Cover Thursday: In Flames (Depeche Mode)- Everything Counts

Depeche Mode is not an easy band to cover. Lots of bands try to just duplicate what Depeche Mode did rather than make it their own. In 1997, In Flames did a cover of Everything Counts. It’s a very interesting version. Take a listen.

Cover Thursday: Joe Bonamassa (Led Zeppelin)- Tea For One

Led Zeppelin is a very hard band to cover and do justice. There has only been a select few over the years that are worth while. A friend of mine pointed out this cover that the fabulous blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa did. While the vocals aren’t the greatest, the arrangement is great! Joe really nails Jimmy Page’s tone and compliments his style. So here is Joe Bonamassa’s cover of Tea For One from the underrated album Presence.

Cover Thursday: Rise Above- 24 Black Flag Songs To Benefit the WM3

In 2002, Henry Rollins put together a compilation album of different singers, taking on Black Flag songs. The album was made to raise money and awareness for the West Memphis Three. This album featured some really amazing covers of Black Flag songs. Some of the singers that took part were, Iggy Pop, Lemmy, Corey Taylor (Slipknot/Stone Sour), Tom Araya (Slayer), Mike Patton, Tim Armstrong and Lars Frederiksen (Rancid), Cedric Bixler- Zavala (At The Drive-In/Mars Volta), and so many more.

Cover Thursday: Faith No More- War Pigs

Real+Thing

Faith No More is one of the most underrated yet influential bands of the past 25 years. Back when they released their album The Real Thing in 1989 they had a cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.” This is one of the best Black Sabbath covers I’ve ever heard. Mike Patton’s delivery on this song is unbeatable and dareI say better than Ozzy singing it! Obviously the original is still great, the arrangement that Faith No More made for it just took it up a notch!

Cover Comparison: Aaron Lewis vs Corey Taylor (Alice In Chains)- Nutshell

Alice In Chains is one of my favorite bands of all time. I’ve heard a few covers of Nutshell over the years and thought these two guys have been the closest to nailing it. What one do you think is better, Aaron Lewis or Corey Taylor?

Aaron Lewis: Nutshell

Corey Taylor: Nutshell

Cover Thursday: John Frusicante (The Bee Gees)- How Deep Is Your Love

A friend of mine recently showed me this gem. I’ll admit I can’t stand the Bee Gees, but this is actually really good. I never thought I’d enjoy a Bee Gee’s song. John Frusciante is way underrated as a guitarist and his rendition of this is outstanding! Thanks for the recommendation Patrick!

Cover Thursday: How To Destroy Angels (Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music)- Is Your Love Strong Enough?

This version can be found on the soundtrack for the David Fincher version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It’s quite a haunting take on the original Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music version. Both versions are great. It’s all a matter of preference!
