One of my favorite things about doing Audioeclectica and writing about up and coming bands is being able to watch them grow. Some of the bands of the week I’ve written about have really stepped up their games from their first releases. One such band is Spirit In The Room. Led by main songwriter and multi instrumentalist Dennis Sanders, Spirit In The Room has carved out their own niche. The use of electronics and programming fits perfectly with the experimental sort of doom punk rock vibe. There seems to be a river of inspiration flowing through Dennis, as the band is constantly releasing new material that just keeps getting better. One other thing that I really dig about Spirit In The Room is the fact that Dennis isn’t afraid to take chances with his music. There are tons of different influences that poke their heads out in the songs, and that’s what makes Spirit In The Room different and intriguing. Check them out as they are about to embark on a small tour.

Band Of The Week: Khemmis

If there is one thing I love in heavy music, it’s huge riffs. Sometimes the “riff” can transport you to another realm. The vibe alone from that is something special. Then when you combine that riff with melody, oh my, my head will about explode. Recently I came across a band that has mind melting riffs combined with a sense of melody that soars. That band is Khemmis. Their most recent album Hunted, was voted as the album of the year by Decibel magazine. After checking out the album I can see why their album was voted as so. Hunted is chock full of rifftastic gems and melody that adds and an exclamation point to their doomy 70’s influenced rock. There is something else about Khemmis that really stands out too. And that is their dedication to making “albums.” While Hunted is only 5 songs, all the songs are epic and have that ebb and flow, which makes for a great album. So take some time and get familiar with Khemmis, you’ll dig it!

Band Of The Week: Crowhurst

If there is one thing I really enjoy  about music, it’s when I come across bands/artists that are taking chances. Not just taking chances though, but, putting out music that is deeply rooted in inspiration and emotion. This weeks band of the week Crowhurst, is just that. The music is dark and full of rage, all the while being experimental and pulverizing. There are shades of industrial, black metal, and ambiance throughout the songs. Led by vocalist/keyboardist/sampler Jay Gambit, Crowhurst have brought back the dark industrial vibe that has been missing from the genre for some time. One can tell from listening to them, that they really believe in what they are creating. Nothing seems forced or misplaced. If you are looking for something dark, heavy and bombastic, then Crowhurst is what you need.

Band Of The Week: A Mirror Hollow

One of the things I look for in bands is a sense of melody. Without melody, the music all blurs into noise. There is a band out there that is taking the combination of melody and heavy rock to new heights, A Mirror Hollow. This 4 piece band, based out of Los Angeles, is exciting and bringing the melodically heavy with them. A Mirror Hollow has released their self titled EP a while back and since then, the band has only gotten better and have really found their sound on newer songs like “Ridicule The Innocent” and “Blame.” Their live shows are as energetic as their music and then some. Each member of the band brings a unique element to the group, making them something to be intrigued by. A Mirror Hollow is on the right track to make an impact among their peers, and those listening to sing along.

Band Of The Week: Car Bomb

Being original isn’t easy these days. There is a sense of “it’s been done before,” but, there are some bands out there that have been inspired to create music that takes it up a notch. One band in particular that the inspiration bug has hit is Car Bomb. They have released a new album called META that is spectacular, and the footage I’ve seen of their live shows, makes them really something to watch. If you were to take a bit of Meshuggah, a bit of Gojira, a little Deftones (more of their atmospheric sound), and a dash of The Dillinger Escape Plan, what you get is Car Bomb. This band packs one hell of a punch. From the technical instrumentation, to the scathing vocals, Car Bomb is quite the band to look out for. They are punishing in their delivery, yet have a keen sense of space and bits of melody.

Band Of The Week: Vagus Nerve

These days making music with people across the country has been made simple by the internet. The makings of Vagus Nerve started that way, and the end result is something to talk about. After the end of his band God Forbid, guitarist Doc Coyle began putting together the pieces with vocalist Ravi Orr to create music for the purpose of creating passionate music with no restraints or genre guidelines. What they have come up with along with additional input from drummer Moe Watson of Shai Hulud, guitarist Mike Gowen, and Alex Oxenreider on bass, has allowed them to follow their own path. Sonically Vagus Nerve are a rock band with a touch of prog and artistry to help separate them from the pack. Think A Perfect Circle meets Karnivool with a dash of metal. Their debut E.P. Visceral is about to be released and deserves your attention. Vagus Nerve really allows Doc Coyle to shine as a songwriter.  Based on the songs “Do You Know Who I Am” and “Pull Me Out,” Vagus Nerve is in the right direction to realizing their full potential.

Band Of The Week: Kolm

13419284_822936204503235_1254381607007926710_n.jpg

The ability to mix genres is no easy task. There has to be an element of purity to it. Some bands can do it and Kolm is one of those. By mixing progressive rock, with ambient soundscapes, a bit of electronics, and some good old heavy riffs, Kolm has created a captivating sound. Not to mention they do this a three piece band, which brings its own merit. Their self titled EP stretches past the norm and leaves you wanting more. Next week Kolm will be sharing the stage with three other great bands, With Our Arms To The Sun, Socionic, and Mal. I would recommend not missing this show!

Band Of The Week: Fero Lux

12745617_1025451457516114_2809417117390985688_n.jpg

Throughout the many genres of heavy music there is one that has always been intriguing to me. It’s one of the silliest names but it makes for very interesting music. The genre is “Mathcore,” see it’s a really silly name, but there have been quite a few bands that have come through that genre like The Dillinger Escape Plan and Botch. Which now brings me to Broward County locals Fero Lux. Taking their love of bands like Botch and Dillinger along with Poison The Well, Thursday and a bit of Deftones, Fero Lux has created a blend of their influences to make music that they believe in. Their newest release No Rest is a blistering delivery of socially conscious lyrics, staccato riffs, and rhythms that challenge you not to tap your foot. Fero Lux is the band for you if you are into the mathcore/post hardcore genres.

Band Of The Week: Lybria

552456_10151098934661791_877801089_n.jpg

There are two types of bands these days. Those that blatantly rip off the bands they are influenced by, and there are bands out there that use other bands as inspiration to come up with something that really represents them. Libra is a band that falls into the latter. Taking their cues and inspiration from bands like Failure, Thrice and the very underrated Oceanside, the gents in Lybria have made music that is spacey, proggy, and atmospheric. The resurgence of bands like Failure and Hum have really helped bands like Lybria to delve deeper in their repertoires to deliver music that is fulfilling. These guys are on the right track and can only get better. Their debut full length should be out soon, so watch out for that!

Band Of The Week: Kink

10616205_1436551723234054_8206509622022131074_n.jpg

One of the coolest things about doing Audioeclectica is when I get emails from bands asking me to check them out. I always take the time to listen since they took the time to write me. Every so often, I come across a band that peaks my attention enough. Recently I got a note from a band from Toronto asking me to check them out, and when I did I was very intrigued by what I heard. The band is Kink. They are a duo that bares similarities to the likes of Tegan and Sara, in that they are both females. But the music speaks for itself. With influences ranging from dark pop, Blink 182 (their self titled album), Brand New and a touch of harmony, you get Kink. There is a darkness to their pop sound that makes it stand out. Singers and guitarists Dani Gagnon and Erica Schiopu have a way with melodies that while soothing, can haunt you in a good way. Kink will be playing the Viper Room in Hollywood at the end of June, so check them out!
